Light steel frame buyer guides
Recycled content in light steel framing
What recycled content means for steel framing, why the figure varies by mill, and what documentation to request instead of trusting a headline percentage.
Recycled content is one of the most quoted and least checked claims in steel framing. A single number rarely applies to every coil from every mill, so the useful question is not "how much" but "documented by whom, for which batch".
Two ways steel is made
- Basic oxygen furnace: uses mostly iron ore and a share of scrap.
- Electric arc furnace: melts mostly scrap steel.
Recycled content therefore differs sharply by route and by mill. Industry associations publish average figures; those are averages, not a guarantee for your delivery.
Pre-consumer and post-consumer
Green building programs commonly distinguish scrap generated inside manufacturing (pre-consumer) from material recovered after use (post-consumer). If a project needs a figure for a rating system, ask which definition the supplier's number uses.
What to request
- Mill certificate or environmental declaration naming the producer.
- The basis of any recycled content percentage and whether it is per batch or an average.
- Third-party verification, if the project requires it.
End of life
Cold-formed steel members can be separated from other materials at demolition and sent to scrap. Fasteners, insulation and linings determine how easy that separation is, so design for it if it matters to you.
Where Digital Oro fits
Digital Oro International's material catalog lists a light steel frame made of AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel, 0.75 or 0.95 mm, with a zinc-aluminum coating of more than 150 g/m2, offered to Australian and American standards. It also lists wall frames, floor joists, roof trusses and sub-floor systems. See the light steel frame catalog map and the full ten-category catalog. The catalog gives no prices, lead times, stock levels or performance ratings for recycled content. Anything specific to your project has to come from Digital Oro International in writing, and from your engineer of record. Text Digital Oro on WhatsApp to start that conversation.

Questions people ask
Is steel recyclable?
Yes. Steel is widely recycled, and the worldsteel association reports it is the most recycled material by volume. How much recycled content is in a specific coil depends on the mill and its production route.
Is there one recycled content figure for steel studs?
No. The figure depends on whether the steel was made in a basic oxygen furnace or an electric arc furnace, and varies by producer. Ask for the mill documentation.
Does Digital Oro publish a recycled content figure?
Its catalog does not state one. Ask in writing and request supporting documents.
Does coating affect recyclability?
Zinc and zinc-aluminum coatings are generally handled in steel recycling streams, but confirm with a local scrap processor.
