Light steel frame buyer guides
Seismic considerations for light steel framing
What to ask about earthquake design when a project uses light steel framing: who designs it, which code applies, and which details carry the load.
Seismic performance is a property of a designed system on a specific site. A frame member's grade and coating say nothing by themselves about how a building will behave in an earthquake.
What carries earthquake load
- Lateral system: shear walls with sheathing or straps, braced frames, or other engineered systems.
- Connections: screws, anchors and hold-downs that tie wall to foundation and floors to walls.
- Load path: a continuous route from roof to ground.
Questions for the engineer
- Which code and which seismic design category apply to the site?
- Which lateral system is assumed, and who supplies its components?
- Are the anchors and hold-downs detailed on the drawings?
- Does the frame supplier's member size match the engineered design?
Substitutions
Do not swap member thickness, grade or fasteners without the engineer's approval. A change that looks equivalent can change how the system resists load.
Where Digital Oro fits
Digital Oro International's material catalog lists a light steel frame made of AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel, 0.75 or 0.95 mm, with a zinc-aluminum coating of more than 150 g/m2, offered to Australian and American standards. It also lists wall frames, floor joists, roof trusses and sub-floor systems. See the light steel frame catalog map and the full ten-category catalog. The catalog gives no prices, lead times, stock levels or performance ratings for seismic performance. Anything specific to your project has to come from Digital Oro International in writing, and from your engineer of record. Text Digital Oro on WhatsApp to start that conversation.
Next step
Add the engineer's connection schedule to your RFQ so quotes match the design.
Questions people ask
Is steel framing good in earthquakes?
Cold-formed steel buildings can be designed for seismic regions, but performance depends on engineered design, connections and the lateral system, not the material name.
Who is responsible for seismic design?
The engineer of record for the site, under the local code.
Does a catalog description prove seismic suitability?
No. Only project-specific engineering and local approval do.
Does Digital Oro state a seismic rating?
Its catalog does not. Request engineering support in writing for your site.
