Houston caregiver La'stacia Brown started at age 7 caring for her blind grandmother. Now she runs a private in-home care company
La'stacia Brown, known as Staci J, says her caregiving began at seven, helping her blind grandmother. Today she leads StacieJ Cares Private Caregivers, a non-medical in-home care service in Houston, and has written a book for caregivers.
Most people who end up in caregiving arrive by accident: a parent falls, a spouse is diagnosed, a job opens up. La'stacia Brown, who goes by Staci J, says she arrived at seven years old, in a bathroom, with her grandmother. Today she is the founder and CEO of StacieJ Cares Private Caregivers LLC, a private in-home care service in Houston, Texas.
This profile is drawn from her company's public website, where she tells the story in her own words. Everything below is attributed to her or to the site.
A grandmother, a bathroom emergency and a blessing
Brown writes that her journey began when she was staying with her grandmother, who was blind because of diabetes, and an older cousin. Her grandmother had a bathroom emergency. "Even at such a young age," she writes, she stepped in to help without hesitation. After she cleaned her grandmother up, she says, her grandmother looked at her and said, "Surely goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life."
"That moment changed me," Brown writes. She says it sparked a lifelong passion for caring for the elderly, and that from that day she knew her purpose was to support and protect people who can no longer fully care for themselves.
From family caregiver to company founder
The company's home page says Brown brings more than 20 years of medical experience to the work and describes her decision to start the business as embracing her heart's desire. She founded StacieJ Cares, she writes, to offer not only in-home non-medical support but "real love, compassion, and companionship" to elderly and disabled people. Clients, in her words, become family.
Her stated values are compassion, respect, dignity and excellence, with honesty, loyalty and dedication also named on the site. The home page carries the motto "Excellence is Earned." Brown writes that caregivers in this field need a pure heart, genuine compassion and a willingness to go the extra mile, and that her caregivers are chosen "not just for their skills, but for their hearts."
What the company says it does
StacieJ Cares is a non-medical service. According to its website, trained CNA/caregivers help with bathing, dressing, bathroom needs, hair and nail care, light housekeeping, grocery shopping, and medication and cleaners pickups. The site also describes health monitoring, in which a caregiver keeps wellness charts and documents a client's health status to help spot problems early, and help with mobility.
Brown describes the everyday side of the job too: running errands, dancing, coloring, watching TV, or sitting and talking, whatever brightens the day. The site also lists traveling certified nursing assistants for people who want to travel but need help: airport to hotel, cruises and road trips, family vacations, and medical travel support.
Non-medical means help with daily living, not nursing. If a parent needs wound care, injections or other skilled tasks, that comes from licensed nurses or a home health agency, usually on a doctor's order. A private caregiver works alongside that care and tells the family what they notice. For a fuller breakdown, see what a private caregiver actually does.
The book: The Savvy Caregiver
Brown is also an author. Her website describes The Savvy Caregiver: How to Provide Care with Skill, Heart, and Lasting Impact as a guide for anyone stepping into caregiving, "whether by choice, career, or circumstance." Drawing on years of real-life experience, the site says, it uses stories and practical advice to teach caregivers how to balance empathy with professionalism, prevent burnout, build meaningful connections with clients and their families, and keep healthy boundaries and a clear purpose. The book's page links to where to order it.
For families, that emphasis on burnout is worth noting. Many of the people who call a care service are exhausted relatives who have been doing it alone. Our guide to respite care in Houston covers how a break can work.
What a family can ask for
A profile is not a vetting. Before you hire any caregiver or care company, including this one, ask in writing:
- Who employs the caregiver, and what happens if that person is sick or the match is not right?
- How are caregivers screened, trained and insured?
- What are the rate, the minimum shift length and any extra charge for nights or weekends?
- Who do you call, and how fast will they answer, when something goes wrong?
- Can you meet the caregiver, or have a trial shift, before committing?
Our guide on how to hire a trustworthy private caregiver in Houston walks through each of these.
