Prepare your business for time away
How to plan a month away as a business owner
Plan a month away by naming the purpose, mapping risks week by week, assigning coverage and agreeing how you can be reached. Use the worksheet to make it explicit.
Planning a month away means choosing the purpose, mapping revenue and deadline risk across the weeks, assigning coverage, and agreeing how and when you will be reached. The worksheet on this page walks through each part so the month is a deliberate decision, not a hope.
Decide why the month
A month is long. Name what you want to be different when you return: health, clarity, a strategic reset. If you cannot name it, a shorter trip may do. Compare lengths on 14 days vs 30 days away from the business.
Map the four weeks
| Week | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | What must be finished or handed off before you leave? |
| Weeks 2 and 3 | What will happen in the business that needs a decision? |
| Week 4 | What will you re-enter to, and what should wait? |
| After | What is blocked for catch-up? |
Coverage, communication and cash
- Coverage: who decides what, see How to set an emergency escalation plan before travel.
- Communication: a weekly check-in at most, in writing.
- Cash: payroll, taxes and big payments scheduled and reviewed with your accountant.
Worksheet use
Fill the prompts on this page, then share a short version with your team. A plan that only exists in your head will not hold.
Consider the program
Lions Gate Retreats lists a 30 day option in Tulum (lionsgateretreats.com, checked 2026-10-12). Whichever program you pick, ask what a typical week looks like.
Questions a month away raises
- What happens if a key employee resigns while you are gone, and who handles it?
- Which customers need to hear from you in person before you go?
- Does anything in your contracts, loans or insurance require your signature or presence?
- How will you handle family obligations during the month?
When to choose a shorter plan
If the worksheet turns up many unresolved items, split the plan: take two weeks first and build toward a longer absence once the business has proven it can cope. A month is not better than two weeks if it leaves the company exposed. Check any financial or legal question with your accountant or attorney.
