What beginners should ask a martial arts retreat
Beginners should ask about level splits, coach experience with newcomers, sparring rules, intensity control, injury procedures and what to do on day one.
The short answer
A good retreat welcomes beginner questions. Ask how newcomers are grouped, how contact is controlled, and who looks after you if it goes wrong.
Level and grouping
- Are classes split by level?
- Can you train with a coach one on one at first?
- What is a typical first day?
- Is there a minimum fitness level?
The Lions Gate site (read 2026-10-12) describes an application conversation covering readiness; ask what they look for.
Contact and sparring
Ask whether sparring is optional, how partners are matched and what protective gear is used. You can say no to contact until you are ready.
Injury and medical
Ask who has first aid training, where the nearest clinic is and how emergencies are handled. See the insurance guide.
Preparation
Do not arrive cold. Build general fitness in the weeks before and discuss any condition with a clinician.
This is general education, not medical or coaching advice. Consult a clinician before starting hard training.
Honesty on application
Share your experience and limits honestly. The goal is a fit between you and the program.
