Travel insurance questions for combat-sports retreats

Check that your policy covers combat-sports training, medical care abroad, evacuation, trip cancellation and your gear. Read the exclusions and ask the insurer in writing.

The short answer

The risk is not the headline cover, it is the exclusion list. Ask whether your policy covers the specific activities on the schedule, in writing, before you pay.

Activity exclusions

Ask the insurer to confirm in writing whether contact training, sparring and grappling are covered, and whether coverage changes with level or intensity. Keep the reply with your booking.

Medical cover and evacuation

  • What are the medical expense limits abroad?
  • Is emergency evacuation covered and to where?
  • Does the insurer pay hospitals directly or reimburse you?
  • Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Trip cancellation and interruption

Compare the retreat cancellation terms with your policy. The cancellation guide explains what a retreat should state. Check which reasons your insurer accepts.

Gear and liability

Ask about cover for sports equipment, laptops and theft. Ask the retreat whether guests sign waivers and what they cover.

What the retreat should tell you

Ask whether the retreat requires insurance, and whether it has its own cover. Do not rely on a verbal answer.

Questions people ask

Will standard travel insurance cover boxing or jiu-jitsu?

Not always. Many policies exclude or limit contact sports, so read the exclusions and ask the insurer directly.

What about training injuries?

Ask whether injuries from training sessions are covered, and whether sparring is treated differently from fitness classes.

Does insurance cover medical evacuation?

Some policies do and some do not. Ask for the evacuation limit and the conditions.

Is this financial or insurance advice?

No. It is a question list. Read your policy and speak to the insurer or a licensed adviser.
