Travel and practical fit

Training retreat laundry and equipment checklist

Ask how laundry works, what gear the retreat supplies, how shared equipment is cleaned, and pack accordingly. Use the checklist to confirm each point.

The short answer

Laundry and equipment questions are easy to skip and annoying to discover late. Ask them before you pay, then use this checklist to set expectations.

Laundry

  • Is washing included, and for which items?
  • How often, and what is the turnaround?
  • Is there a washing machine you can use yourself?
  • Where do wet items dry in a humid climate?

Shared equipment hygiene

Combat sports involve shared surfaces. Ask about mat cleaning, pad and glove rotation, and what happens if someone has a skin issue. You are entitled to clear answers about hygiene routines.

Gear supplied versus gear you bring

Ask for a list. A program may supply gloves, wraps, pads and mats, or it may expect you to bring items. The Lions Gate site (read 2026-10-12) mentions a take-home fighter kit; ask exactly what is in it.

Care of your own gear

Bring a mesh bag for wet items, odour control for shoes and gloves, and a small repair kit. Rotate pairs of shoes and wraps so they dry fully.

Damage and loss

Ask what the retreat is responsible for and whether your own travel insurance covers equipment. See the insurance guide for questions on cover.

Questions people ask

Is laundry usually included?

It varies by program. Ask whether training clothes are washed, how often, and whether there is a limit.

How should shared equipment be cleaned?

Ask how gloves, pads, mats and grappling spaces are sanitised and how often. A clear routine is a good sign.

Should I bring my own gloves?

Many people do for fit. Ask what is supplied and whether sizes are available.

What if my gear gets damaged or lost?

Ask who is responsible and whether your travel insurance covers sports equipment.
