Airbus holds its 870-jet 2026 target, banking on a record fourth-quarter surge

Airbus kept all of its full-year targets after nine months, but it has delivered only 547 of a planned 870 commercial jets, leaving a delivery push larger than anything in its history for the final quarter.

Airbus reported nine-month results on Wednesday and left every full-year target in place: around 870 commercial aircraft delivered in 2026, adjusted operating profit of about 7.5 billion euros, and free cash flow before customer financing of about 4.5 billion euros. Holding the line is a statement of confidence. The arithmetic behind it is daunting.

The number behind the number

Airbus has handed over 547 jets in the first nine months of the year, up from 507 in the same stretch of 2025. To reach 870, it must deliver 323 more aircraft between October and December. That is roughly 108 a month, against an average near 61 a month over the first nine months. A quarter that heavy would be a company record, and it is why the full-year number now rests almost entirely on the final weeks.

Cash tells the same story. Free cash flow before customer financing was negative 1.27 billion euros through September, yet the full-year guidance is a positive 4.5 billion. Airlines pay the bulk of a plane's price on delivery, so nearly six billion euros of cash swing has to arrive in the fourth quarter, delivered plane by delivered plane.

The nine-month numbers

Metric (9 months 2026)Valuevs 9m 2025
Commercial aircraft delivered547507

EBIT Adjusted€4.50bn+8%
EBIT (reported)€4.55bn+35%
Net income€3.59bn+36%
Free cash flow before customer financing€-1.27bn€-0.91bn
Net commercial orders1,105514
Order backlog9,310—

The order book is the deeper strength here. Net orders of 1,105 aircraft, more than double a year earlier, and a backlog of 9,310 jets mean demand is not the constraint. Production and the supply chain are.

Confirmed versus claimed

The nine-month figures are reported results. The 870-delivery target is a company objective that Airbus itself ties to conditions: it is stated before mergers and acquisitions, assumes current tariffs, and assumes no further disruption to trade, air traffic, the supply chain or operations. Chief executive Guillaume Faury kept his language general, saying, "Our plan is clear, and our teams are onboard to meet our objectives." Airbus did not publish a specific promise on the fourth-quarter pace.

Who it hits

For airlines, a missed Airbus target means jets, and the seats and routes that come with them, slip into 2027. Carriers planning capacity around new A320neo-family and A350 deliveries are the ones exposed. For engine makers and suppliers, the fourth-quarter ramp is the test of whether the bottlenecks that have capped output all year have eased. For travelers, more delivered aircraft is how fares eventually feel supply relief, though the effect is slow. Airbus shares traded near 192 euros on Wednesday, below their January high.

What to watch

  • Monthly delivery updates for October, November and December, the only real-time read on whether 870 is reachable.
  • Whether the fourth-quarter cash inflow matches the 4.5 billion euro full-year guide.
  • Any late revision to the delivery target, which Airbus has had to make in prior years when the supply chain slipped.
  • Supplier commentary on engine and fuselage availability into year-end.
