Didi Taihuttu's midterm playbook: Bitcoin dipped after the last 3 elections, then was up 24% to 92% a year later

The Bitcoin Family founder expects a possible dip around the November 3 vote and keeps buying for the long term. The daily prices from the last three midterms show why that approach has worked.

With the US midterm elections on November 3, 2026, Didi Taihuttu, the Dutch Bitcoin advocate behind The Bitcoin Family, says he expects a possible dip around the vote, and that he keeps buying and holding for the long term anyway. We pulled the daily prices from the last three midterms to see how that playbook would have worked. It held up every time.

The dip came each time

Using Bitstamp's daily BTC/USD candles, we measured each midterm election-day close against the lowest price in the following 120 days.

MidtermElection-day closeLowest low within 120 daysDays laterClose one year after
Nov 4, 2014$330.22$152.40 (-53.8%)71+23.6%
Nov 6, 2018$6,447.50$3,122.28 (-51.6%)39+44.9%
Nov 8, 2022$18,550.00$15,479.00 (-16.6%)13+92.1%

The lows landed 71, 39 and 13 days after the votes, just as the pattern Taihuttu describes suggests. The dips have also been getting smaller, from about 54% to 52% to 17%, which fits a bigger, more mature market.

And a year later, Bitcoin was higher every time

This is the part that matters for a long-term buyer. One year after each election day, Bitcoin closed higher: up 23.6% after 2014, 44.9% after 2018 and 92.1% after 2022. Someone who kept buying through the dip, rather than selling into it, came out ahead in all three cycles. That is the core of Taihuttu's approach: expect volatility around big events, and do not let it shake you out of a long-term position.

What is different this time

Each cycle had its own backdrop: 2014 and 2018 came after big prior peaks, and 2022 coincided with the collapse of FTX. This year Bitcoin traded near $81,580 on Bitstamp on the morning of October 20, 2026, with traders watching support near $81,000 and $77,000. For scale, a 10%, 15% or 20% dip from here would mean roughly $73,400, $69,300 or $65,300. That is arithmetic, not a forecast. Three cycles cannot guarantee a fourth, and anyone buying through a dip should size for the swings: in 2018, a buyer on election day was down about 47% at the 90-day mark before the recovery.
