Citi and Coinbase open stablecoin payments to Citi's business clients; the merchant never holds a coin

Coinbase will run the crypto side and convert to dollars, Citi settles as bank of record. The headlines say merchants can now take stablecoins. The fine print says which merchants, and what they actually receive.

Coinbase and Citi expanded their partnership on Monday with two products: Citi's institutional clients can now accept stablecoin payments at checkout through Spring by Citi, the bank's payment-acceptance platform, and Coinbase will use Citi's Virtual Account Wallet to give its own business customers bank-account-style accounts. The companies said both launch first in the United States, with more features in the coming months, according to the Coinbase announcement as reported by Markets Media and PYMNTS.

Citigroup shares were down 1.6% at $132.08 and Coinbase was down 0.5% at $194.08 at 2:55 p.m. ET, according to Nasdaq data.

How the money actually moves

On the payments side, a customer pays in a stablecoin. Coinbase's infrastructure takes it and converts it to dollars automatically, and Citi settles the funds to the merchant as the bank of record. "Citi's institutional clients can now accept stablecoin payments at checkout without holding or managing stablecoins directly," the announcement said, as quoted by Yahoo Finance.

On the accounts side, it runs the other way. Businesses building on Coinbase can give their customers accounts that accept, hold and send funds, with incoming dollars automatically converted into stablecoins. Ledger Insights explained why Coinbase needs a bank for that: although one of its subsidiaries has conditional approval for a national trust charter, it does not have a Federal Reserve account and cannot take deposits. Citi's virtual accounts give each customer their own bank routing details. Crypto Briefing, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that the stablecoin balances are held at Coinbase and currently earn a 3.75% annual reward.

What the headlines get wrong

"Citi merchants can now take stablecoins" is true only in a narrow sense. The payment product is for Citi's institutional clients, companies such as multinationals, Crypto Briefing reported, that use Spring by Citi for merchant acquiring, gateway technology and settlement. It is not a switch that turns on for a coffee shop or a contractor that banks at a Citi branch. Citi first announced the Coinbase collaboration last October and said then that it would start with institutional clients, PYMNTS reported.

The second point matters more for anyone who runs a business. The merchant ends up with dollars. It carries no crypto price risk, and it has no stablecoins to account for or safeguard. What changes is the customer's side: someone holding stablecoins can pay a large company without cashing out first. For the company, it is one more way to get paid, settled by a bank it already uses.

For a small merchant, nothing is different today. The practical signal is that a systemically important bank is now willing to sit between stablecoins and ordinary merchant settlement. Ledger Insights noted that fintechs usually find sponsor banks among smaller specialist lenders, not a bank of Citi's size. If this spreads to the processors small businesses use, the model already on show is one where the merchant never touches the coin.

The competition for the same dollars

Stablecoin accounts that pay a reward compete directly with the bank deposits businesses leave sitting in checking. That gap between what checking pays and what cash-like alternatives earn is the subject of our story on Apollo's "agentic bank run" warning. Here, a bank has decided to provide the plumbing rather than fight it.

What to watch: whether Citi extends stablecoin acceptance beyond institutional clients, which stablecoins Spring by Citi supports at launch, and whether rival acquirers follow. Live prices are on our crypto prices page.
