Coinbase Exchange prices at about 8:10 AM ET on October 19. The 24-hour change compares the latest trade with the price 24 hours earlier. The 7-day change compares it with the October 12 daily close (UTC).

Bitcoin, three months. Chart by TradingView.

Bitcoin's 24-hour range on Coinbase was $80,565 to $83,076, a spread of about 3%. Ether's was $2,325 to $2,444, about 5%, so it was the more volatile of the two over the day.

JPMorgan takes its deposit token to Ethereum

The day's main news is institutional. JPMorgan will make JPM Coin, a token that represents dollar deposits at the bank, available to institutional clients on Ethereum, Bloomberg reported. CoinDesk and Cointelegraph carried the same report. According to CoinDesk's summary, the bank said Ethereum's liquidity makes it attractive for crypto companies seeking blockchain payments and for financial firms settling trades or backing tokenized assets. The move extends JPMorgan's blockchain work beyond its private Kinexys network.

One distinction matters. A deposit token is a claim on a bank deposit, not a stablecoin backed by a reserve pool, so it is a different product from USDC or USDT. Ether itself did not react: it is up 0.2% over 24 hours, in line with the rest of the market.

USD1 loses $400 million in two weeks

On the stablecoin side, World Liberty Financial's USD1 has seen its market capitalization fall to about $4.02 billion from $4.43 billion on October 6, a drop of roughly $401 million or 9.1%, according to CoinGecko data cited by Cointelegraph. Research firm Onchain Benchmark attributed the decline to large redemptions on Ethereum and BNB Chain, including nearly $200 million from a single unidentified address on BNB Chain. It could not establish who controlled that address or why the tokens were redeemed, and we could not either.

The token held its peg throughout, trading between $0.998 and $1.000, so this is a supply story rather than a depeg. World Liberty's proof-of-reserves dashboard showed about $4.01 billion in reserves.

Other headlines and the rates backdrop

Layer-1 network Qubic halted operations on Sunday after an attacker reportedly exploited weakly generated wallet seeds to drain about $1.4 million from more than 1,400 accounts, according to the project's statement as reported by Cointelegraph. Qubic said 87.1% of the drained funds remain frozen on its network and that the exchange MEXC froze the account that received the rest.

The macro backdrop is a high long-term yield. The 10-year Treasury yield closed Friday at 5.09% and the 30-year at 5.43%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. We did not find a source tying this morning's crypto moves to rates, so we make no claim that they are connected. See the 10-year chart.

What traders are watching

  • Whether Bitcoin holds its week-ago level of about $81,740 while the other majors trail it.
  • USD1 supply, and whether new minting offsets the redemptions.
  • JPM Coin's rollout details, which Bloomberg's report did not fully set out in the coverage we read.
