Where bitcoin runs into sellers, and where it finds buyers
Blockchain analytics firm Glassnode says two groups of holders who are sitting on losses have capped bitcoin's rallies this year, Cointelegraph reported. The idea is simple: people who bought higher tend to sell when the price climbs back to what they paid, just to get out even. Glassnode puts the breakeven for coins bought six to 12 months ago at $87,700 and for coins bought one to two years ago at $99,500. According to the report, bitcoin rose to the first group's breakeven in January and then fell by more than a third, and met the second group's in May and fell by about a quarter.
Measured against the Coinbase price, $87,700 is about $4,230, or 5.1%, above the market. Cointelegraph also cited Glassnode's estimate of the cost basis for U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs at $81,500, about 2.4% below, with $80,000 (4.3% below) described as a level where order-book bids cluster. The 24-hour range on Coinbase was $81,196 to $83,609, so the ETF cost basis sat just above the day's low. These are one firm's on-chain estimates, not market prices, and they are a way to read where sellers and buyers may be, not a forecast.
The bond market backdrop
The 10-year Treasury yield closed Tuesday at 5.12%, down from 5.15% on Monday, and the 30-year closed at 5.42% from 5.48%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. A small pullback in yields is consistent with a firmer day for risk assets, but we did not find a source tying today's crypto move to it, so we are noting the two facts side by side rather than linking them. See the 10-year chart.
What moved the smaller coins
We looked for a specific cause behind XRP's 4.4% gain and Avalanche's weaker week, and did not find one in the CoinDesk and Cointelegraph coverage we read this morning. Moves of this size across every major coin at once usually reflect the market as a whole rather than coin-specific news, but that is an observation about the pattern, not a confirmed reason.
What traders are watching
- $87,700 and $80,000 on bitcoin, the Glassnode levels above and below the market.
- Treasury yields, with the 10-year at 5.12% after Tuesday's close.
- The weekly laggards, Chainlink and Avalanche, to see whether the 24-hour bounce holds.
