A quiet range after a week of swings
CoinDesk reported that bitcoin dipped to about $81,000 late Thursday and then stayed inside a range of less than $1,000, calling it the calmest stretch in days after a week of $3,000 swings. It said bitcoin is still below $82,500, a support level it lost on Thursday. Cointelegraph, citing CoinGecko, put Thursday\'s trading range at $80,996 to $82,551, down from Wednesday\'s intraday high of $84,777.
Our six-month chart shows bitcoin 5.8% below its September 21 peak.
ETF outflows end a three-day inflow streak
According to Cointelegraph, citing SoSoValue data, U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $635 million in net outflows on Thursday. That more than erased Wednesday\'s $528 million of inflows, ended a three-day streak that had drawn $1.08 billion, and pushed October\'s net flows to minus $175 million. It was the largest single-day outflow since June 25. The funds still show $443 million of net inflows for the week. Ether ETFs lost about $111 million on Thursday, while XRP ETFs took in about $3.6 million.
Altcoins rebound unevenly
In its morning markets report, CoinDesk said its CD80 altcoin index rose 0.7% to 1.4% depending on the time of its update, memecoins gained 2.9% and pepe jumped 13% to 14%. CoinDesk said the pepe run, 23% over the week, had no clear catalyst. We did not find a cause either, so we are not offering one. Polkadot and Cosmos each rose more than 5%, according to the same report.
Macro: oil, the Fed and yields
CoinDesk said Brent crude touched its highest level since early May, complicating the inflation outlook ahead of the Federal Reserve\'s October 27 to 28 meeting. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6% on Thursday, its steepest decline since June, according to CoinDesk. The 10-year Treasury yield closed Thursday at 4.96%, down from 5.13% a day earlier, according to the Treasury\'s daily yield curve. CoinDesk noted Treasuries gave back some of that move Friday morning. We did not find a source tying bitcoin\'s range to any single one of these, so we list them side by side. See the 10-year chart.
