What moved
The weekend pullback is small next to the week behind it. Bitcoin traded between about $80,085 and $81,925 over the past 24 hours, so the move is a drift off the highs rather than a break. Traders had expected a much worse week: the Federal Reserve raised rates to a 3.75%-4% range and the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act on September 15, and prices went up anyway. CoinDesk reported that analysts are split on why, with some crediting global liquidity and adoption rather than anything coming out of Washington.
Yesterday we flagged AVAX's jump and noted we could not find a confirmed cause. We can now. The move lines up with tokenization news out of the Avalanche Summit in New York on Thursday. Ava Labs President Charley Cooper said the New York Stock Exchange had spent roughly a year testing Avalanche technology as it builds infrastructure for tokenized securities, according to crypto.news. One important caveat, in Cooper's own framing: he did not say Avalanche had been picked. "I leave it to the NYSE guys to talk publicly about where they are in the whole process," he said. NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange has not named the blockchain or blockchains that will support its planned digital securities venue, and its design is meant to work with more than one network.
The rule behind the trade
The reason tokenization is suddenly a price story is a regulator, not an exchange. On September 17 the SEC issued what it calls an "Innovation Exemption", a temporary, conditional order that lets Tokenized Securities Venues trade tokenized National Market System stock through permissioned automated market makers without registering as exchanges. The exemptions expire five years after publication, and they come with conditions: caps on the number of symbols and the volume traded, a requirement that token holders get the same rights as holders of the ordinary shares, public and auditable smart contracts on a permissionless ledger, and a halt in the token whenever the underlying stock is halted on its listing exchange. The Commission is taking public comment.
Analysts at Goldman Sachs and Citizens told CoinDesk that Coinbase, Robinhood and Circle are the names best placed to benefit, through custody, tokenization plumbing and stablecoin settlement, while the trading caps and issuer opt-outs limit how much business could move away from the traditional exchanges any time soon. For traders, that is the useful frame: this is a pilot with a ceiling on it, not a switch being flipped.
What traders are watching
- Whether ICE names a chain. AVAX is pricing in a role that has not been awarded yet.
- Comment letters on the SEC order, which will show how issuers and the listing exchanges feel about their stock trading onchain.
- The perpetual futures filings from Coinbase, Kalshi and Kraken, which we covered here.
- Next week's U.S. data, in the week ahead.
