Bitcoin at $83,369, Ether at $2,643: crypto prices today, September 24, 2026

Every major coin on our board fell as the 10-year Treasury yield hit its highest level since 2007 and October Fed hike odds jumped, leaving bitcoin about 2% above the average spot ETF buyer's cost, according to Coinbase data.

Bitcoin traded at about $83,369 on Coinbase early Thursday, down 2.5% over 24 hours but still 9.2% higher than a week ago. Ether was at $2,643, down 2.9% on the day and up 8.1% on the week. All eight coins we track fell over the past 24 hours, and the smaller majors fell hardest: XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano and Avalanche each lost 6% to 7%.

What moved

The bond market did the damage. The 10-year Treasury yield closed Wednesday at 5.11%, up from 4.96% on Tuesday, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve, its highest since 2007. The two-year yield rose to 4.85% from 4.71%. We covered the bond selloff itself here.

Behind the yields is a sharper Fed outlook. CME's FedWatch tool showed a 75.3% chance of another rate hike at the October 28 meeting, Cointelegraph reported, and CoinDesk reported that futures now point to four quarter-point increases by June 2027, taking the fed funds range from 3.75%-4% to 4.75%-5%. CoinDesk cited a stronger-than-expected S&P Global composite PMI of 58.4 for September and higher oil and diesel prices. The dollar index rose to about 101.24, its highest since July, while gold and Nasdaq 100 futures fell, CoinDesk said. Rising yields and a firmer dollar raise the cost of leveraged crypto positions funded in dollars, which is why they tend to weigh on bitcoin.

We could not find a coin-specific cause for the bigger drops in XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano and Avalanche. CoinDesk noted that the tokens that ran hardest earlier in the week were giving back the most, and all four are still up double digits over seven days, Avalanche by nearly a third.

The number behind the ETF inflows

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs still took in a net $347 million on Wednesday, their fifth straight day of inflows, Cointelegraph reported, citing SoSoValue. That was down from $715 million on Tuesday and $999 million on Monday. Spot ether ETFs added about $105 million.

The cushion under those buyers is thinning fast. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart estimates the average spot ETF holder's cost at $81,722 per bitcoin, Cointelegraph reported on Wednesday. At Thursday's Coinbase price, bitcoin sits about $1,650, or 2.0%, above that line. Yesterday that margin was about 4.6%. The typical ETF buyer only moved back into profit this week for the first time since January, so a slip below that level would put the average holder under water again. Bitcoin's Coinbase low over the past day was about $82,709, which shows how close it has already come.

What traders are watching

  • The ETF cost basis near $81,700, and whether daily inflows hold up if price reaches it.
  • About $82,833, the level FOREX.com analyst James Stanley flagged as the next one to watch, per Cointelegraph.
  • Thursday's data: weekly jobless claims and August new home sales, CoinDesk noted, plus Fed speakers. Strong numbers could push hike odds and yields higher still. See the 10-year chart and our pre-market brief.
