Coinbase Exchange prices at about 8:05 AM ET on September 26. The 24-hour change compares the latest trade with the price 24 hours earlier. The 7-day change compares it with the September 19 daily close (UTC).
The weekly gain is really one day
The green in the 7-day column is easy to misread as a steady climb. Coinbase's daily candles show otherwise. Bitcoin closed Sunday, September 20 (UTC) at about $81,160 and Monday at about $86,595, a jump of 6.7% in a single session. It has not closed higher on any day since. At Saturday's price it is about 2.9% below Monday's close, and Ether is about 3.2% below its own Monday close of $2,776. For anyone who bought into Monday's move, this has been a losing week so far, not a winning one.
The level we have been tracking still holds. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart puts the average cost of a bitcoin held in U.S. spot ETFs at $81,722, Cointelegraph reported. Bitcoin is about $2,377, or 2.9%, above it, down from a 3.6% cushion on Friday morning. Its 24-hour low on Coinbase was $83,091. ETF buying had slowed for three straight days through Thursday, when net inflows were $191 million, according to Cointelegraph, citing SoSoValue. We had not seen Friday's flow figure at publication.
Rates eased a little
The bond pressure that dominated the week let up on Friday. The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.17%, down from 5.18%, and the 2-year fell to 4.81% from 4.87%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. Bitcoin barely moved in response, which fits the pattern of the past few days: crypto has neither sold off hard on rising yields nor rallied when they dipped. Our Friday market close has the stock side.
What was in the news
XRP. XRP was the weakest coin on our board. We did not find a report that explains the drop, and the news around the token was mixed. An XRP Ledger upgrade called Batch, which would let users bundle up to eight transactions, including a payment and a tokenized asset delivery that complete together or not at all, slipped to October 9 at the earliest. Validator support briefly fell below the required 80%, which resets a two-week activation clock, CoinDesk reported. Bitget also said stolen assets in Thursday's breach included XRP, among others, Cointelegraph reported.
Bitget. The exchange raised its count of affected assets to about $388 million from $352 million after finding more on the Zcash and TRON networks, and said withdrawals remain paused. Circle and Tether froze one attacker wallet holding about $318,000 in stablecoins, but other attacker addresses still hold more than 63,000 ETH, which no issuer can freeze, CoinDesk reported. We covered the numbers in our Bitget story.
Washington. SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, who ran the agency's Crypto Task Force, leaves on October 2, which will leave the commission with two members, Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda, CoinDesk and Cointelegraph reported. Separately, Blockchain Association chief executive Summer Mersinger is stepping down on October 16, a week after the Senate failed to advance the Clarity Act. More in our story.
What traders are watching
- Monday's high. Bitcoin near $86,600 and Ether near $2,776 are the closes that set this week's range.
- The $81,722 ETF cost level, and whether Friday's flows extended the inflow streak.
- XRP Ledger's October 9 date, which only holds if validator support stays above 80% for two weeks.
- Yields, with the 10-year at 5.17%. See the 10-year chart.
