Gitcoin (GTC) is up 157% in a week, and a day's trading was 8 times its market value
The governance token of the Ethereum grants platform has risen 70% in 24 hours on volume far above its $18.6 million market value, and is still 99% below its all-time high. We looked for a cause and could not verify one.
Gitcoin (GTC), the token tied to the Gitcoin grants platform for Ethereum projects, is up 156.5% over seven days and 70.0% in the past 24 hours, according to the market data behind our movers board, built at 7:25 a.m. New York time on Monday. It changed hands near $0.213 for a market value of about $18.6 million, which ranks it 937th by size. It is the largest mover on this morning's list that we can describe without leaning on stale or broken data.
The numbers, all of them
| Period | Change |
|---|---|
| 24 hours | +70.0% |
| 7 days | +156.5% |
| 14 days | +152.1% |
| 30 days | +164.0% |
| 1 year | −23.7% |
| From its all-time high (about $22.37) | −99.0% |
The one-year figure is the one to read next to the weekly gain. Even after more than doubling and then some, GTC trades below where it did a year ago, and at roughly 1% of its record. A 157% rise from a very low base does not take a token back to where it was; it takes it from very small to small.
Lead with churn: 8.2 times its own value
About $153 million of GTC traded in the past 24 hours, against a market value of $18.6 million. That is a churn ratio of 8.22: for every dollar the whole token is worth, more than eight dollars changed hands in a day.
In plain words, the same tokens are being passed back and forth many times over. When turnover runs that far ahead of size, the price is being set by the people trading it between each other rather than by new money arriving and staying, and it can reverse as fast as it rose. A churn ratio above 1.0 is unusual in the top 1,000 coins; this one is the highest on today's list. One caveat: trading volume is reported differently by each data provider, and some price pages we checked show a much lower volume figure and a different price than the one above. Treat the volume number as a sign of how busy the market is, not a precise measure.
We looked for a cause and could not find one
We searched for Gitcoin news, the project's event listings and price coverage of GTC this week. What we found were automatically generated price items noting short bursts in the token, and one (from Coinfomania) that attributed the rise to general flows into small, volatile altcoins. None of them pointed to an exchange listing, a protocol upgrade, a funding round, a partnership or a governance vote on the days the price moved.
The Gitcoin-specific items that surfaced were older: a June 2026 security alert about a suspected front-end attack on a Gitcoin subdomain, and event listings for earlier grant rounds. None is dated to this move, and we are not linking any of them to it.
We could not verify what drove the rise. That is the finding. It does not mean there is no reason, only that we could not find one from a named source, and we will not guess at one.
What the move does and does not tell you
- It describes a price that has already moved. Nothing here says it will hold, repeat or reverse.
- A market value under $20 million means relatively small sums can move the price in either direction.
- Gitcoin's own platform activity, grant rounds and treasury are separate from the token's price; we found no evidence this week that they changed.
Live prices for the largest coins are on our crypto prices page, and the smaller speculative tokens are tracked on the meme coins board. The full list of this morning's big movers is on /movers.
