Bitcoin at $85,329, Ether at $2,700: crypto prices today, October 4, 2026

A quiet Sunday after Friday's round trip: Bitcoin touched $87,249 on the weak jobs report, then closed the day below where it opened as Treasury yields finished higher. Weekend trading is running at about a fifth of Friday's volume.

Bitcoin traded at about $85,329 on Coinbase early Sunday, up 0.5% over 24 hours and 1.0% over seven days. Ether was at $2,700, up 0.7% on the day and 0.4% on the week. Seven of the eight coins we track rose overnight, led by Chainlink and Solana at about 1.6% each; Avalanche was the only one lower. Over the week the picture is split: Bitcoin, Ether, Chainlink and Avalanche are slightly up, while Cardano and Dogecoin are down more than 3%.

Friday's spike did not survive the bond market

The week's big move came on Friday, when the September jobs report showed the economy adding just 29,000 jobs, with unemployment rising to 4.2%, as CoinDesk reported. Cointelegraph said economists had expected 84,000 and that August was revised down to 133,000. Traders cut the odds of a Fed rate hike in October to 18% from 64% a week earlier, according to CME's FedWatch tool as cited by Cointelegraph.

Coinbase's own candles show how short-lived the reaction was. Bitcoin opened Friday (UTC) at $84,849, hit $87,249, and closed the day at $84,505: a 3.1% slide from the high that left it 0.4% below where it started. The 24-hour range since then has been tight, from $84,538 to $85,423, about 1%.

The reason is in the Treasury's closing numbers, which tell a different story from the early headlines. Yields fell on the jobs print in morning trading, but by the close the 10-year had finished at 5.28%, up from 5.24% on Thursday, and the 30-year at 5.63%, up from 5.61%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. The "Treasury relief rally" that some desks had pointed to as bitcoin's cleanest upside catalyst did not hold through the session. We covered that bond move in our 10-year yield story.

A thin weekend tape

Volume matters for reading today's gains. Coinbase traded about 8,762 bitcoin on Friday, versus about 1,921 on Saturday, roughly 22% of Friday's amount. With so little changing hands, small weekend moves in either direction say less than they appear to, and the first real test comes when U.S. markets reopen Monday.

Policy news: banks sue the OCC, IMF pays El Salvador

The Independent Community Bankers of America sued the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Friday in federal court in Washington, arguing the regulator exceeded its authority by granting crypto firms national trust bank charters, Cointelegraph and CoinDesk reported. Those charters do not allow deposit-taking or lending, but they are a path for crypto companies into federal oversight, so the case is worth watching for anyone tracking crypto custody.

The IMF approved about $138 million for El Salvador under its $1.4 billion program, granting waivers on missed targets that included Bitcoin accumulation. The fund said "no further Bitcoin accumulation is envisaged beyond the documented donations," Cointelegraph reported. Elsewhere, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $102.7 million on Thursday after $148.7 million of outflows on Wednesday, per SoSoValue data cited by Cointelegraph.
