Pacific island food is not one cuisine. Guahan Grill in Oceanside cooks the food of Guam, which is Chamorro, and it sits alongside poke and Spam dishes that island diners across the Pacific will recognize. If you are searching for island food in Oceanside, this is what the menu offers.

Rice, soy, garlic, fire

The base of most plates is red rice, with a choice of barbecue chicken, pork ribs or beef short ribs from the grill, and a salad or mac salad. Marinades lean on soy sauce, garlic and onion. The Chamorro Fried Rice ($19.99) is made with soy sauce, garlic and onions and a choice of chicken or Spam.

Poke

  • Poke Bowl, $20.99: marinated ahi tuna, seaweed salad, red rice and cucumbers, with spicy mayo and furikake.
  • Poke Salad, $20.99: ahi poke over spring mix with carrots, wonton strips, cucumbers, furikake and house dressing.
  • Poke Nachos, $19.99: fried wonton chips with marinated ahi, spicy mayo and seaweed salad.

Spam

The Spam Roll ($9.99) wraps fried Spam, rice, cucumber and spicy mayo in seaweed. It is sold on its own and as a lunch pairing with two lumpia ($11.99, weekdays 11am to 3pm).

The Guam dishes to know

  • Chicken kelaguen ($13.99): chopped barbecue chicken mixed with lemon, salt, green onion and hot pepper and served chilled with wonton chips. There is also a mahi mahi kelaguen at $18.99.
  • Empanada ($14.99): shredded chicken in a corn masa shell, fried.
