Quant jumps 39% and Ondo 30% on bank tokenization news, but the banks' network runs on deposits, not tokens
The Clearing House picked Quant's technology for a tokenized-deposit network due in 2027. Its announcement never mentions the QNT token, and futures trading in the coin ran far ahead of spot.
Quant's QNT token traded at $98.12 on Coinbase around midday Friday, up about 39% from Wednesday's close of $70.68. Ondo's token was at about $0.536, up 30% from $0.412 over the same two days. The moves followed a cluster of tokenization announcements on Thursday, led by U.S. bank payments company The Clearing House choosing Quant as its technology provider.
What the banks actually announced
In its release, The Clearing House said Quant will power its On-Chain Money Initiative, a network that lets financial institutions clear and settle tokenized deposit transactions. Quant's software will handle interoperability, orchestration and transaction management, and connect the network to existing bank rails including RTP and CHIPS. The Clearing House expects it to be available to participating institutions in the first half of 2027.
"Tokenized deposits are now the de facto way banks move money on-chain," Quant chief executive Gilbert Verdian said in the release.
The thing the rally skips over
The Clearing House's announcement is about Quant the company and its software. It does not mention the QNT token. What moves on the network is bank deposits in tokenized form, money that stays a liability of a regulated bank, not a cryptocurrency. A contract for Quant's technology is a real business win for Quant; whether any of that flows to holders of QNT is a separate question the release does not answer.
The trading pattern fits a market pricing the headline rather than new demand for the coin. Futures volume in Quant ran about 20 times spot volume, and about four times in Ondo, where open interest rose 29% to roughly $578 million, CoinMarketCap reported. When leveraged positions drive a move, it can unwind quickly. On Coinbase, QNT's full trading range in the last 24 hours ran from $83.37 to $106.49.
Ondo's piece, and the rest of the day
Ondo Finance launched onchain portfolios built on BlackRock model strategies on Thursday, available to investors outside the United States, according to CoinMarketCap. The same day, Bullish, Equiniti, Alpaca, Apex Fintech Solutions and DriveWealth formed a coalition to set standards for issuer-backed tokenized stocks, and that evening CFTC staff updated guidance on putting customer funds into tokenized assets, which we covered Thursday.
Some tokens rose with no news of their own. Chainlink's LINK was at $13.80 on Coinbase, up about 6.4% from its open over the past 24 hours.
The longer view is less dramatic. Even after the jump, Ondo is down about 39% over 12 months and Chainlink about 33%, according to CoinMarketCap. Over seven days on Coinbase, QNT is up about 55% from $63.23 and Ondo about 35% from $0.399.
