Meta carries tech's one bright spot

Meta Platforms rose 3.4% to $742.96, from $718.67 on Friday, after it released Muse Wonder, which CNBC reported the company calls its most advanced model for powering digital assistants. Access requires a $20 or $100 monthly subscription, CNBC said, which makes it a test of whether users will pay for AI rather than get it free. Microsoft added 1.1% and Apple 1.3%, but Nvidia fell 1.3%, Amazon 1.1% and Tesla 1.2%, which is why the Nasdaq 100 lost 0.7% despite Meta's gain.

Two sharp single-stock moves in opposite directions: Ciena fell 10% to $405.01 and Fair Isaac rose 10.9% to $740.00. Seeking Alpha's headlines described the first as profit-taking after a recent rally and the second as a rebound from recent selling. We have not confirmed a cause beyond those headlines. Fair Isaac is the stock that fell 26% on September 29. IonQ dropped 9.1% to $36.27 on its all-stock Elisity deal.

Oil up again, and airlines pay for it

West Texas Intermediate futures settled at $93.23 a barrel, up 1.5% from $91.85, and Brent finished at $106.06, up 1.3%, per Yahoo Finance. Energy stocks followed: Exxon Mobil rose 1.9%, Chevron 1.4% and ConocoPhillips 2.6%. Delta Air Lines fell 2.5% and United Airlines 2.8% as crude rose, after a Houthi strike closed Riyadh's main airport on Saturday. Gold futures fell 0.5% to $4,194.50 an ounce.

Rates and the week

With Treasuries closed, the latest official yields are Friday's: 4.80% on the 2-year, 5.24% on the 10-year and 5.60% on the 30-year, according to the U.S. Treasury. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said in remarks reported by CNBC that she prefers smaller, quicker moves to a larger correction later, and CME's FedWatch tool put the odds of a December hike near 88% (our report).

The test comes fast. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report Tuesday, per CNBC as relayed in Sunday's Nightcap, and existing home sales are forecast at 3.95 million. September CPI follows Wednesday, forecast at 0.6% for the month and 3.6% over 12 months against 0.4% and 3.4% before, on our economic calendar; we worked through what that means for owners.
