Super Micro posts $19.9 billion quarter, but margin falls to 12.7% and operations burn $434 million
The server maker beat even its own raised preview, guided December-quarter sales to $19.5 to $21.5 billion and the full year to $72 to $82 billion. The profit rate and the cash flow tell a different story from the headline.
Super Micro Computer reported net sales of $19.9 billion for its fiscal first quarter, which ended September 30, according to its earnings release filed with the SEC. That is nearly four times the $5.0 billion of a year earlier and 79% above the $11.1 billion of the June quarter. It also beat the $18.5 to $19.5 billion range the company pre-announced on October 20.
After the report, Nasdaq.com showed the stock at $33.998 at 5:26 PM ET, up 8.31% from its $31.39 close, which was itself a 3.12% gain on the day. After-hours prices on a name this volatile can change quickly.
The headline numbers
| Q1 FY27 (Sept. 2026) | Q4 FY26 (June 2026) | Q1 FY26 (Sept. 2025) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $19.9 billion | $11.1 billion | $5.0 billion |
| Gross margin | 12.7% | 17.5% | 9.3% |
| Net income | $1,594 million | $1,178 million | $168 million |
| Diluted EPS | $1.75 | $1.62 | $0.26 |
Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $1.81, against $0.35 a year ago. The company's stock-based compensation adjustment to gross margin was only $8 million, so the GAAP and non-GAAP margins are nearly the same: 12.7% and 12.8%.
The number behind the number
Three pieces of arithmetic, ours rather than the company's, change how the quarter reads.
Gross profit grew far less than sales. Multiplying sales by gross margin gives roughly $2.53 billion of gross profit this quarter, against about $1.94 billion in June. Revenue rose 79% sequentially; gross profit rose about 30%. The extra $8.8 billion of sales brought only about $0.6 billion of additional gross profit, because each dollar of sales kept 12.7 cents instead of 17.5.
The net margin fell too. Net income of $1,594 million on $19.9 billion is 8.0% of sales. In June it was $1,178 million on $11.1 billion, or 10.6%. Profit rose in dollars and slipped as a share of each sale. The release does not explain the margin drop, so we will not guess at it: management held a webcast at 5:00 PM ET, and we have not heard it, so the replay on ir.supermicro.com is the place to check for an explanation.
Cash went the other way. Operations used $434 million in the quarter even as the income statement showed a $1.6 billion profit, and capital spending and investments were $47 million. Fast-growing hardware sellers often tie up cash in inventory and receivables, but the release gives no breakdown, so the cause is not confirmed here. The company ended September with $6.9 billion in cash and $8.6 billion in bank debt and convertible notes, a net debt position of about $1.7 billion.
What the guidance implies
For the December quarter Super Micro expects net sales of $19.5 to $21.5 billion and GAAP earnings of $1.59 to $1.83 a share ($1.66 to $1.90 non-GAAP). For the full fiscal year ending June 2027 it expects $72 billion to $82 billion.
Here is the calculation. Subtract the $19.9 billion already booked and the December-quarter range, and what remains for the March and June quarters combined is $32.6 to $40.6 billion at the extremes. Averaged over two quarters, that is about $15.3 to $21.3 billion each, with a midpoint of roughly $18.3 billion. Compare that with the $19.9 billion just reported: the low half of the full-year range would require sales to fall in the second half. The company has not said which end it expects, and large AI server orders arrive in lumps, which is one reason guidance ranges here are wide.
Who this touches
Super Micro sells to the companies building AI data centers, so its quarter is a read on that spending. It is also a supplier-concentration story. The company's own risk language says that as it targets larger customers, its customer base may become more concentrated and its margins lower. A 12.7% gross margin on nearly $20 billion of sales leaves little room if a few large customers delay orders or push on price.
Traders will watch three things next: whether the margin recovers toward June's 17.5%, whether operating cash flow turns positive in the December quarter, and how the company funds growth with $8.6 billion of debt and notes outstanding. The release is also labeled preliminary and unaudited, with final figures subject to change when the 10-Q is filed. Filings are on SEC EDGAR.
