The Nightcap: Nasdaq 100 futures hold at 28,252 after the tech rout, with midterms and AMD next
Futures are nearly flat from the 4 PM prints as Apple slips after hours and a reported U.S. strike on Iran's Qeshm Island nudges oil up. Tuesday brings the midterm elections, AMD and Super Micro earnings, and JOLTS.
The biggest question tonight is whether the tech selloff stops before Tuesday's midterm elections. For now, futures say it has paused: nothing is rebounding, and nothing is breaking further. The Nasdaq 100 closed Monday at 27,989.82, which our chart data puts 10.4% below its Oct. 6 high, and CNBC notes the index has lost 4.4% over five sessions.

Quotes from Yahoo Finance, read about 9 PM ET Monday. Changes are our arithmetic against each contract's 4:00 PM ET price; index futures trade nearly around the clock, so these can differ from other feeds measured against a different baseline. CNBC's live blog showed S&P 500 futures up 0.1% and Nasdaq-100 futures up 0.3% at its own reading time.
Iran: a reported strike, no confirmation
Oil edged up after Reuters carried a report from the Wall Street Journal that the U.S. struck Iran's Qeshm Island. We could not read the underlying article and have no confirmation from either government, so treat it as a reported claim. It lands on a day when Reuters also reported Iran saying contacts on ending the war continue after talks ended with no breakthrough. Crude had fallen from $104.12 to $96.07 on Monday on peace-draft hopes, as covered in our closing report; tonight's move recovers less than half a dollar of that. Gold, at $3,962.70, is holding most of Monday's bounce.
Single-stock headlines
- Apple: CNBC reports the stock was down about 2% in extended trading after a margin forecast and iPad sales that missed estimates. We covered the numbers in our Apple story.
- Disney: Bloomberg reported that the company is weighing thousands of layoffs and has asked managers to target 20% cost savings. Disney had not confirmed the plan in the reports we read.
- Asia: CNBC says South Korea's Kospi fell about 3.5% at the open on the tech losses, with Samsung down about 5%. Japan is closed for a holiday.
What to watch at Tuesday's open
Election day is the main event. CNBC cites prediction markets giving Democrats close to a 75% chance of taking the Senate, and JPMorgan's view that a full Democratic sweep could pressure AI stocks. Treat that as one bank's scenario, not a forecast. Before the open, Pfizer, Shopify, Eaton and Marathon Petroleum report. After the close, AMD and Super Micro follow, and the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey and factory orders arrive in the morning. The October jobs report lands Friday.
