The Nightcap: Memory-chip rout hits Asia, S&P 500 futures slip 0.2% ahead of bank earnings and CPI
Korea halted program trading as SK Hynix and Samsung fell more than 5%. U.S. futures are modestly lower after a day when memory stocks dragged the Nasdaq, with JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and UnitedHealth reporting before the open.
The biggest story tonight is the memory-chip selloff spreading to Asia. CNBC reported that the Korea Exchange triggered a sell-side sidecar on the Kospi, which briefly halts program trading when Kospi 200 futures fall 5% or more for a minute. The index had opened 3.29% lower. SK Hynix fell 6.5% and Samsung Electronics 5.6%, Japan's Kioxia 8.8%, Advantest 6.1%, Tokyo Electron more than 5% and SoftBank 6.7%, while the Nikkei 225 opened down 1.2%. CNBC's Monday close story tied the U.S. weakness to higher oil and memory-stock losses. A Fox Business video headline pointed to China's chipmaker CXMT advancing its technology, but we have not read that report and treat the cause as unconfirmed.
Where futures stand
Yahoo Finance data read at 8:51 PM ET, with changes measured against each contract's prior reference price. Futures trade above the cash index because of the December contract's carry, so they are not comparable with Monday's cash closes.
| Contract | Now | Change | Monday cash close |

| S&P 500 (ES) | 7,843.75 | -0.18% | 7,807.24 |
| Nasdaq 100 (NQ) | 30,741.00 | -0.51% | 30,664.70 |

CNBC had S&P futures down about 0.1%, Nasdaq-100 futures down 0.2% and Dow futures up 17 points at 8:56 PM. Brent was above $106 after Saturday's Riyadh airport attack, CNBC said. The bond market was closed for the holiday, so the last official 10-year yield is Friday's 5.24%, per the U.S. Treasury.
Single stocks after the close
- Six Flags (FUN): $10.69 after hours against a $11.92 close, down about 10%, per Yahoo Finance. The New York Times reported a rider died and others were hurt on a roller coaster in Georgia; Investing.com linked the slide to it.
- Chipotle and Starbucks: A Starbucks spokesperson told Fox Business the company is not acquiring Chipotle, ending takeover speculation (Reuters ran the same). Chipotle closed at $30.40, down 3.8% on the day; Starbucks rose 1.7% to $92.29, per Yahoo Finance.
- Syndax: down 15% after hours when its Phase 2 lung-disease trial missed its primary endpoint, CNBC said.
What to watch at Tuesday's open
- Before the bell: JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and UnitedHealth report. Seeking Alpha headlines put options pricing at about 2.8% for JPMorgan and 5% for UnitedHealth.
- Data and Fed speakers: existing home sales, forecast at 3.95 million against 3.98 million, on our economic calendar; Fed officials Waller, Barkin and Collins are scheduled to speak, per CNBC.
- Wednesday: September CPI, forecast at 0.6% on the month and 3.6% on the year.
- Ukraine: Reuters headlines tonight say Kyiv accuses Russia of hitting energy targets despite Trump's ceasefire announcement, and the Kremlin rejected a 60-day ceasefire idea. We could not open those reports in full, so treat them as unconfirmed, but they are the reason oil has not eased.
