The Nightcap: Nasdaq futures slip 0.31% after the chip bounce as the 10-year sits at 5.15%

At 9:02 PM ET Nasdaq 100 futures are down 0.31% on the board, while S&P 500 and Dow futures are near flat. Gold is lower, oil is firmer, and Netflix, Meta and Tesla headline a busy earnings stretch.

The biggest thing tonight is a mild one: the tech rebound is not extending. Monday's close had the Nasdaq 100 up 1.17% after last week's chip rout, but its futures are giving back part of that overnight, while the 10-year Treasury yield finished the session at 5.15%, up from 5.09% on Friday.

Futures and gold from the Chronicle markets board at 9:02 PM ET; cash closes from Yahoo Finance as recorded in our close story. The board quotes continuous contracts, so its percent change and the gap to the cash close can disagree, as they do for the S&P 500 here. Read that one as flat. Only the Nasdaq 100 is lower on both measures.

Rates, oil and crypto

The Treasury par curve for Monday has the 10-year at 5.15% (Friday 5.09%), the 2-year at 4.77% (4.74%) and the 30-year at 5.48% (5.43%). Our board shows WTI at $100.63, up 0.30%, and Brent at $111.12, up 0.25%. Those board quotes ran a few dollars from the settlements CNBC reported earlier, so we read the direction, not the level. Saudi Arabia postponed its late-October investor conference as Houthi attacks escalate, which we covered here. The board has the dollar index at 101.61, little changed. Bitcoin is $81,574, down 0.94% over 24 hours, and Ether is $2,396, down 1.05%, per Coinbase.

Headlines to know

  • The Fed. A hold at 3.75%-4.00% is expected October 28, and officials are weighing how much the AI boom adds to inflation. Our Fed piece has the detail.
  • Deals. Silgan and American Industrial Partners agreed to buy Trivium Packaging in a $3.4 billion deal, per the Reuters and WSJ headlines. Our deal breakdown reads the structure.

What to watch at tomorrow's open

Our economic calendar shows building permits Tuesday, with a forecast of 1.388 million against 1.394 million before. Netflix reports Tuesday after the close, and Meta and Tesla report Wednesday after the close, per our week-ahead piece. Jobless claims follow Thursday (forecast 200,000, prior 199,000) and the flash S&P Global composite PMI Friday (prior 58.4). The Fed decides October 28. With yields this high, a second day of tech gains would need rates to stop climbing.
