Update: CoreWeave and Iren fall 9% to 12% after Texas flips, while Microsoft and Amazon rise 7%
By late morning Wednesday the AI data center trade had split in two: neoclouds and memory sold off on the Texas governor result, while the hyperscalers that would pay for the buildout rallied. Here are the live numbers.
This updates our earlier story on data center votes. CNBC reported that AI data center stocks came under pressure after Democrat Gina Hinojosa won the Texas governor's race on a promise of an immediate data center moratorium. We read Nasdaq's live quote feed at 11:47 a.m. ET to see where things stand now, and the picture is more divided than the headline.

What changed since the first reports
CNBC's page says SpaceX was down 4% and Tesla down 5% after the open, with CoreWeave and Iren each down 4% in morning trading. Our earlier story carried larger early figures. By 11:47 a.m. CoreWeave and Iren had fallen further, to 9% and 12%, while SpaceX and Tesla had recovered to about 3.5%. The leveraged, Texas-exposed names are bearing the damage, not the whole sector.
Why the split makes sense
CNBC cited Wells Fargo estimates that 27% of planned US data center gigawatts sit in Texas, with Georgia at 7% and Ohio and Pennsylvania at 5% each. Wells Fargo's chief equity strategist, Ohsung Kwon, had warned this week that a Democratic win in Texas could be a "left-tail event" for the AI trade, according to CNBC. Neoclouds such as CoreWeave rent out capacity from sites they are still building, so a permit delay hits their revenue schedule directly. The big cloud companies have projects across many regions and other revenue lines, and their shares rose on the day. That is our read of the pattern, not a statement from any company.
CoreWeave was already far from its highs. Yahoo Finance data shows it about 65% below its May 6 peak. In our earlier story it closed Tuesday at $53.74.
What to watch
- What Hinojosa actually does after she takes office in January. We covered her win and Abbott's earlier permit freeze. A governor needs the legislature and regulators to deliver a moratorium.
- Debt markets. Bloomberg's headline today says CoreWeave bonds hit new lows; we could not read that article, so we cannot give figures.
- Tesla and SpaceX. CNBC reported Musk spent at least $474 million on the midterms, including $224 million in Texas.
