Update: AP projects Ossoff and Cooper win, and CNBC says the House leans Democratic
Update to our election-night schedule: with 13% of North Carolina precincts in, Roy Cooper leads Michael Whatley 64% to 34%, and CNBC says House control "leans Democratic." Stock futures were down about 0.5% at 7:34 p.m. ET.
This updates our election-night schedule with only what has changed. We do not call races. Every call below is the outlet's, with the time that outlet reported it, and several seats are still open.
Senate calls so far
| Race | Result | Called by |
|---|---|---|
| Georgia | Sen. Jon Ossoff (D) wins re-election over Rep. Mike Collins (R) | AP projection; Reuters headline at 7:41 p.m. ET, CNBC post at 7:57 p.m. |
| New Hampshire | Rep. Chris Pappas (D) wins the open seat over former Sen. John Sununu (R) | AP projection, per CNBC at 8:27 p.m. ET |
| North Carolina | Former Gov. Roy Cooper (D) wins the open seat over Michael Whatley (R), a flip from Republican to Democratic | AP projection, per CNBC at 8:30 p.m. ET |
CNBC\'s Election Desk, separate from AP, said at 8 p.m. ET that Florida\'s Senate race between Sen. Ashley Moody (R) and Angie Nixon (D) was "too close to call," after FiftyPlusOne had favored Moody. In its 8:39 p.m. summary CNBC listed no call in Ohio, where polls closed at 7:30 p.m. ET, or in Maine. We found no other Senate calls from AP, Reuters or CNBC as of publication.
The context from our earlier piece still holds: Republicans entered the night with 53 seats, so Democrats need a net gain of four. North Carolina is their one flip so far.
The North Carolina count
The State Board of Elections\' unofficial results page, last updated at 8:37 p.m. ET, showed:
| Candidate | Votes | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Roy Cooper (D) | 1,633,305 | 64.05% |
| Michael Whatley (R) | 872,855 | 34.23% |
| Shannon Bray (Libertarian) | 25,209 | 0.99% |
| Michael Dublin (Green) | 18,872 | 0.74% |
Only 343 of 2,626 precincts (13.06%) had reported, but the board\'s ballots-cast line read 2,561,071 of 7,885,046 (32.48%), so the lead rests on a large block of votes already tallied. A 64% share this early is not a final margin, and the final one can change as more precincts report. CNBC posted the AP projection at 8:30 p.m.; the numbers above are the state\'s, not the AP\'s. We could not retrieve Georgia\'s official county-level count tonight, so we give no Georgia vote totals.
House and markets
CNBC\'s Election Desk projected at 8:01 p.m. ET that House control "leans Democratic," estimating Democrats will win at least 200 of 435 seats and Republicans at least 160. That is a lean, not a majority: 218 are needed, and a lean is not a call. CNBC also reported that Democrats were projected by AP to win two Florida districts, the 14th and 22nd, that had been redrawn to favor Republicans.
On markets, CNBC reported that as of 7:34 p.m. ET, Dow futures were down 235 points (0.5%), S&P 500 futures down 0.5% and Nasdaq-100 futures down 0.9%, after earlier gains faded as polls began to close. That was before the North Carolina and New Hampshire projections, and we have no later reading we can verify, so check live quotes. In our earlier piece, JPMorgan said it saw the S&P 500 down about 0.5% on Wednesday if Democrats win both chambers.
What to watch next
- 9 p.m. ET: polls close in Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Wisconsin, Arizona and New Mexico, among others.
- Ohio and Maine: the Sherrod Brown-Jon Husted special election and Susan Collins\' race were uncalled in CNBC\'s latest summary.
- Texas (Paxton vs. Talarico) and Governor Abbott\'s race: analysts quoted by CNBC see a surprise as a possible short-term market mover.
- Wednesday\'s open: the cash market opens at 9:30 a.m. ET; futures trade overnight.
