Aggregate is the granular material, such as sand, gravel or crushed stone, used in concrete, mortar, asphalt and as base under slabs and paving.

Definition

Aggregate makes up most of the volume of concrete. Fine aggregate is sand. Coarse aggregate is gravel or crushed stone. It is also used loose as a compacted base.

A plain example

Illustrative example: before a slab is poured, a layer of crushed stone is spread and compacted to give an even, free-draining base. The concrete itself also contains aggregate.

Why it matters

The size, cleanliness and grading of aggregate affect strength, workability and how well a base drains.

Common confusion

Aggregate is not cement. Cement is the binder. Aggregate is the filler that the binder coats and holds together.

On a project

Check what the specification requires for the base and for the mix, and ask the supplier for test data where the project requires it.

Quick answers

  • What is the difference between fine and coarse aggregate? Fine aggregate is sand. Coarse aggregate is larger gravel or crushed stone.
  • Why does aggregate need to be clean? Dirt and clay can weaken the bond with cement.
  • Is recycled aggregate allowed? It depends on the specification and local rules. Ask the engineer.

Related terms

Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.
