Rebar

Rebar is the steel bar placed inside concrete so the finished element can resist pulling and bending forces that concrete alone handles poorly.

Rebar is the steel bar placed inside concrete so the finished element can resist pulling and bending forces that concrete alone handles poorly.

Definition

Rebar, short for reinforcing bar, is a ribbed steel bar embedded in concrete. Concrete is strong when squeezed and weak when stretched, so the bar carries the tension.

A plain example

Illustrative example only: a drawing calls for bars at a stated spacing in both directions of a slab, with a stated cover so the steel sits away from the surface. The crew ties the bars on small supports, and the inspector checks size, spacing and cover before the pour.

Why it matters

Rebar is hidden once concrete is placed, so the check happens before the pour. Wrong size, spacing or cover cannot be seen afterwards.

Common confusion

Rebar is not the same as welded wire mesh, which is a factory-made grid of thinner wires used in lighter work. The engineer decides which one applies.

On a project

Ask for the bar grade, size schedule and lap lengths from the structural drawings, and for mill certificates if the specification requires them.

Quick answers

  • What do the numbers on a bar mean? They are size and grade marks rolled into the bar; the specification says which ones are acceptable.
  • Why does cover matter? Concrete cover protects the steel from moisture and fire.
  • Can I place rebar without an inspection? Many jurisdictions require an inspection before the pour; check with the local authority.

Related terms

Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.
