A damp-proof course is a waterproof layer built into a wall near the ground to stop moisture rising into the structure.
Definition
A damp-proof course, often called a DPC, is a strip of impermeable material set in masonry or under framing that blocks capillary moisture from the ground.
A plain example
Illustrative example only: a layer of plastic or bituminous membrane is laid on top of the foundation wall under the first masonry course, lapped at joints, so water cannot wick upward.
Why it matters
Without it, moisture can travel up porous masonry and cause damp, staining and decay. It is cheap to place and hard to add later.
Common confusion
A damp-proof course blocks rising damp. A vapor barrier controls moisture vapor passing through a wall or floor, which is a different path.
On a project
Check position relative to the finished ground level, lap details and continuity at openings and corners.
Quick answers
- Is DPC the same as damp-proofing a basement? Related, but not the same; DPC is a horizontal layer in a wall, basement damp-proofing is applied to surfaces.
- Where does it go? Above ground level, below the first course or sill, as drawn.
- Can it be added later? Retrofit methods exist but are costlier than building it in.
