Deflection track is a steel track with deep legs that lets a wall stay fixed to the floor while the structure above moves vertically.

Definition

Deflection track is a type of top track, usually with taller legs, that lets the studs slide up and down within it. It allows a non-load-bearing wall to avoid picking up load when the floor or roof above deflects.

A plain example

Imagine a partition under a concrete slab. Over time or under live load the slab sags a little. If the studs were fixed hard to the top, the slab would push on them. In deflection track, the studs are held but free to move vertically.

Why it matters

It protects boards and finishes from cracking and keeps partitions from becoming accidental load paths. The designer sets how much movement the head of the wall must allow, and the installer must follow the fastening pattern shown.

Common confusion

Deflection track is different from a standard track and from a slip joint made with other parts. A fastener driven through the stud into the track can defeat the whole purpose. The details matter, so follow the manufacturer and the drawings.

On a project

Check the head-of-wall detail for the required gap, the fastening position and the fire-stopping or smoke seal that goes in the movement joint. Take care that board screws do not pass through into the track and lock the movement.

Quick answers

  • Why not fix the studs tight to the top track? A tight fix can transfer slab movement into a partition and cause cracks or unintended loading.
  • Is deflection track used in load-bearing walls? It is generally associated with non-load-bearing partitions. Confirm with the engineer of record.
  • How much movement does it allow? That depends on the product and the design. Use the manufacturer data and the project specification.

Related terms

Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.
