Steel frame vs alternatives

Is light steel frame right for this project? A decision checklist

A checklist to test whether a light steel frame suits your building: size, site, climate, codes, supply, skills and budget. Tick what is true and see where the gaps are.

Light steel frame suits many projects and not all of them. Use this checklist before you invest in drawings or a deposit. Each box is something you should be able to answer with a document or a named person, not a guess.

How to use it

  1. Tick only what you can support with evidence.
  2. For each unticked box, assign who will answer it and by when.
  3. Copy the result and share it with your designer, engineer and supplier.

Reading the result

If most boxes in Building and Approvals are open, settle those first: the design and the permission decide whether any system can be built. If Site and climate is open, speak to the engineer about coating, drainage and storm load before pricing. If Supply and skills is open, ask suppliers for the documents listed and test the logistics on paper. If Money and time is open, complete the total-cost worksheet.

When it is a close call between systems, read the comparisons: vs wood, vs masonry, vs heavy steel and vs SIPs and timber.

Where Digital Oro fits

Digital Oro International lists a light steel frame in its own material catalog: AS1397 G550 AZ150 light steel, 0.75 or 0.95 mm, zinc-aluminum coated at more than 150 g/m2, offered to Australian or American standards, with wall frames, 89 mm x 41 mm floor joists, roof trusses and insulated or elevated sub-floors. The light steel frame catalog page maps each line, and the full catalog map shows the other nine categories. The catalog gives no prices, minimum orders or lead times, so those must come from Digital Oro International in a quotation. Ask for the mill certificate and your engineer's sign-off before you rely on any specification.

Questions people ask

How many boxes should I tick?

There is no pass mark. Every unticked box is a question to settle before you commit.

Does a low score mean steel is wrong?

Not necessarily. It may mean the project needs more information, an engineer or a different design.

Who should complete it?

The owner or developer with the designer and engineer, so each answer has a source.

What next after the checklist?

Write an RFQ, collect quotes, and compare with the total-cost worksheet.
