Light steel frame buyer guides
Pests, mold and rot: steel framing versus timber
A neutral look at which risks apply to which framing material, and what a steel frame does and does not remove. Mold needs moisture whatever the frame is made of.
Steel is often chosen to avoid the rot and insect problems of timber. That is a fair reason, but it is not a complete answer, because other parts of a building are organic or damp-sensitive.
| Risk | Timber frame | Steel frame |
|---|---|---|
| Rot | Possible when wood stays wet | Not applicable to the steel; linings can still rot |
| Termites and wood-boring insects | Frame can be damaged | Frame is not food; timber elements can still be attacked |
| Mold | Grows on damp surfaces | Grows on damp surfaces, including linings |
| Corrosion | Not applicable | Possible if coating is damaged and the frame stays wet |
What to ask
- Which other materials in the assembly (sub-floor boards, battens, linings) are organic, and how they are protected.
- How the building keeps moisture out. See moisture and condensation in walls and corrosion protection for steel framing.
The Digital Oro catalog does not make pest or mold claims. Note that its roof system lists a 15 mm OSB reinforcing layer, which is a wood-based board and needs protecting from moisture.
Where Digital Oro fits
Digital Oro International lists a light steel frame as the first category of its material catalog: AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel in 0.75 or 0.95 mm, zinc-aluminum plated at more than 150 g/m2, offered in Australian and American standards, with wall frames, roof trusses and sub-floor options. See the light steel frame catalog map or all ten categories. Prices, lead times and project-specific engineering come from Digital Oro in a quotation; contact Digital Oro with your project.

Questions people ask
Do termites eat steel?
No, termites do not eat steel. They can still damage timber linings, flooring and other organic materials in the building, so protection is still needed where they are active.
Can a steel-framed building get mold?
Yes. Mold grows on damp organic surfaces such as linings and dust. Keeping moisture out is what prevents it.
Does the catalog make pest or mold claims?
No. Do not rely on any such claim without written documentation.
