Light steel frame buyer guides

Galvanizing and corrosion protection for steel framing

How zinc and zinc-aluminum coatings protect steel framing, what AZ150 means, and what the Digital Oro catalog states about its coating.

Steel framing is only as durable as its coating and the way it is installed and kept dry. This page explains the coating terms buyers meet.

How the coating protects

Zinc protects steel in two ways: it forms a barrier, and it corrodes in preference to the steel beneath it (sacrificial, or galvanic, protection). Zinc-aluminum alloy coatings add aluminum for barrier and heat-resistance properties. The coating class number is the coating mass in grams per square metre.

What the catalog states

Digital Oro International's catalog names AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel, 0.75 or 0.95 mm, zinc-aluminum plated at more than 150 g/m2, and describes combined aluminum corrosion and heat resistance with zinc galvanic behavior. It does not publish a service life for the frame.

What to ask for

  • Mill certificate showing steel grade and coating mass for your order.
  • Guidance on cut edges, drilled holes and site repair of damaged coating.
  • Where the building is: coastal, humid or industrial air is harder on coatings. Say so when you request a quote.
  • Details that keep the frame dry, since moisture is the main driver of corrosion. See moisture and condensation in walls.

Where Digital Oro fits

Digital Oro International lists a light steel frame as the first category of its material catalog: AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel in 0.75 or 0.95 mm, zinc-aluminum plated at more than 150 g/m2, offered in Australian and American standards, with wall frames, roof trusses and sub-floor options. See the light steel frame catalog map or all ten categories. Prices, lead times and project-specific engineering come from Digital Oro in a quotation; contact Digital Oro with your project.

Questions people ask

What does AZ150 mean?

A zinc-aluminum alloy coating class with a coating mass of 150 g/m2. Confirm the delivered coating with the mill certificate.

What does the catalog say about the coating?

It says the steel is zinc and aluminum plated at more than 150 g/m2 and credits aluminum with corrosion and heat resistance and zinc with galvanic behavior.

Does a coating last forever?

No. Life depends on environment, cut edges, moisture and installation. Ask for the supplier's basis for any stated durability.
