General construction: DIY and owner-builder
Receiving and storing materials on site
Materials are often damaged or lost between the delivery truck and the wall. Check what arrives against the order, record problems on the spot, and store each product as its maker says.
Good receiving takes ten minutes and saves weeks. Bad receiving turns into arguments about who damaged what.
At delivery
- Have someone ready to receive and a clear place to unload.
- Check the paperwork against your order.
- Count, inspect and photograph before signing.
- Note any shortage or damage on the paperwork.
Record it
Keep delivery notes, photos and batch numbers. For tile, flooring and paint, batch records help if colour varies. See the delivery damage record template.
Store it properly
- Sheets and boards: flat, off the ground, supported and dry.
- Timber and steel: raised, ventilated and protected from standing water.
- Cement and bagged goods: off the floor and kept dry.
- Paints and chemicals: as the label and safety data sheet say, locked away from children.
Protect the site
Keep walkways clear, stack within safe heights and secure materials against theft and weather.
Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.
Quick answers
- What should I check at delivery? Quantity, type, size, batch or lot, damage and that the paperwork matches the order. Photograph problems before the driver leaves.
- Why record damage immediately? Claims are far easier when the damage is noted on the delivery paperwork on the day it arrives.
- Where should I store boards and sheets? Flat, off the ground, supported evenly and protected from moisture, unless the maker says otherwise.
- How should I store paint and chemicals? As the label and safety data sheet state, away from heat and out of children’s reach.
