Before the bell: futures up about 0.7%, oil slides 2%, 10-year yield eases to 4.95%
Stock futures point higher as crude pulls back and Treasury yields dip from last week's 19-year high. The Trump-Xi summit on Thursday is the week's main event, and bitcoin is back near $85,000.
U.S. stock futures were higher early Monday as oil prices fell and bond yields slipped. Dow and S&P 500 futures were both up about 0.7% and Nasdaq-100 futures about 1%, Yahoo Finance reported. The Dow is coming off its third straight weekly loss. Live levels are on our markets board.
Oil and yields both pull back
At 7:16 a.m. New York time our market data showed U.S. crude (WTI) at about $97.47, down 2.4%, and Brent at about $101.92, down 2.2%. Reuters' Morning Bid column tied the drop to hopes that Saudi Arabia restores some flows through its East-West pipeline, though Brent is still above $100. We covered the Sunday night move in our oil story. Gold was down about 0.6% near $4,351.
The 10-year Treasury yield fell about 5 basis points to 4.951%, CNBC reported, after touching a 19-year high of 5.041% last week. The 2-year was near 4.72%. For reference, the Treasury's official Friday close was 5.01% on the 10-year and 4.76% on the 2-year (Treasury data). The 10-year is the rate that steers mortgages, which Freddie Mac last put at 6.95%. Chart: 10-year T-note.
The Fed after last week's hike
Markets now fully price one more rate increase by year-end, with a move as soon as October seen as roughly a coin flip, according to Reuters. The 2-year yield has climbed as much as 36 basis points in two weeks. Background: the Fed's hike to 3.75%-4% and Kashkari's weekend comments.
