Binance: money out, thieves moving
The market is still digesting the theft from Binance on Thursday, which Cointelegraph described as a $6.3 billion hack, the largest in crypto history. For the first reported withdrawals after reopening, see our earlier report.
Two new developments since then. First, customers keep leaving: according to DefiLlama data cited by Cointelegraph, Binance recorded more than $7 billion of net outflows, up from $5.8 billion earlier Monday, while OKX took in about $445 million, Bybit $112 million, Gate $91 million and Bitget $54 million. Binance still held about $127.9 billion in tracked wallets, more than four times OKX's $29 billion. Binance said it had replenished roughly 95% of the affected assets, using its corporate treasury, part of its SAFU fund and part of its futures insurance fund, and has pledged not to pass losses to customers.
Second, the laundering has changed shape. Lookonchain reported that the hackers moved 486,970 SOL, worth about $46.4 million, and were swapping it for Bitcoin through the Relay protocol, Cointelegraph reported, citing Chainalysis, which said most of the attackers' Tron holding wallets had been emptied. About $3 billion of stolen assets was frozen by partners including Tether and Circle, and investigator SomaXBT estimated the attackers still controlled about $3.5 billion. The FBI attributed the theft to North Korea's TraderTraitor group on Saturday. The Bitcoin swaps are small against a Bitcoin market of this size, and the reports do not say how much has been converted so far. We found no confirmed link between those swaps and Monday's price move.
Our read of the tape is limited to what the numbers show: Bitcoin's 24-hour range on Coinbase was $77,499 to $78,762, a spread of about 1.6%, so the market is not panicking. Coins with the biggest weekly losses, Cardano and Solana, are the ones we could not tie to any specific news.
Rates backdrop
The 10-year Treasury yield closed Friday at 4.94%, down from 4.98% a day earlier, and the 30-year at 5.31% from 5.32%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. Yields are drifting lower, which has not so far lifted Bitcoin. See the 10-year chart.
What traders are watching
- Binance's updated proof-of-reserves report, which the exchange said it expected to publish Monday.
- Exchange flows, and whether outflows from Binance slow after the first wave of withdrawals.
- Further freezes of the stolen funds, after Gate said it froze two linked accounts.
