Coinbase Exchange prices at about 8:05 AM ET on October 1. The 24-hour change compares the latest trade with the price 24 hours earlier. The 7-day change compares it with the September 24 daily close (UTC). The quarterly change compares the September 30 and June 30 daily closes (UTC).
The quarter, measured on our own tape
The third quarter was the best for bitcoin since early 2024 and for ether since early 2021, CoinDesk reported, putting the gains at 42.7% and 70.8%. Running the same comparison on Coinbase's daily closes gives almost identical figures, 42.8% and 71.0%, and fills in the rest of the board. The headline coins were not the leaders. Chainlink went from $7.19 to $14.36, a 99.7% gain that very nearly doubled it, and Cardano matched ether at 71%. Dogecoin lagged everything at 31%. In other words, the rally was broad but not even, and the two largest coins sat in the middle of the pack.
ETF streak ends, range holds
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $148.7 million on Wednesday, ending a nine-day run of inflows worth $3.08 billion, CoinDesk reported, citing SoSoValue. Bitcoin briefly topped $85,000 after a softer-than-expected inflation reading but could not hold it. Coinbase's 24-hour high was $85,614 and the low $83,107, which keeps the coin inside the $82,000 to $85,000 band it has held for more than a week. The current price is about 2.3% above the bottom of that range.
Bond yields remain the backdrop. The 10-year Treasury closed Wednesday at 5.29% and the 30-year at 5.64%, according to the Treasury's daily yield curve. CoinDesk said the 10-year touched another 24-year high of 5.362% overnight before easing ahead of Friday's September payrolls report.
MetaMask pulls Ethereum validators
MetaMask said it is responding to a security incident affecting part of its infrastructure and is exiting affected staking validators as a precaution, adding that it has "identified no immediate threat to MetaMask wallets," according to CoinDesk and Cointelegraph. A security researcher estimated about 0.36 ETH in block-production payments was diverted and that the exits cover roughly 523,000 ETH; MetaMask has not confirmed those figures. Lido said the last affected validators should exit by October 7 and that re-entering staking could take up to about 45 days, during which those coins earn no rewards. Ether fell less overnight than any other coin on our board.
