Bitcoin steady, altcoins lag, CPI next

Bitcoin spiked to $84,000 at 08:00 UTC after bouncing from a low of $80,970 on Tuesday, CoinDesk reported. On Coinbase's tape the 24-hour range ran from $82,866 to $84,062, a spread of about 1.4%. The CoinDesk 80 index fell 0.6% since midnight UTC while the larger-cap CoinDesk 20 edged up 0.2%, leaving close to two-thirds of the CoinDesk 100's members lower, and CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season index slipped to 55 from 60 a week ago.

What the CPI print is carrying

Economists polled by Dow Jones expect annual inflation to have quickened to 3.6% in September from 3.4%, according to CoinDesk citing CNBC, with gasoline at $4.34 a gallon against $3.08 a year earlier, per AAA. This is the last inflation reading before the Fed's October 28 decision. Overnight, New York Fed President John Williams said he saw no need for rate increases in 2027 but left the door open to one more this year, CoinDesk reported. S&P 500 futures were up 0.2% and Brent crude held near $106 a barrel.

Standard Chartered and a Solana date

Standard Chartered said Wednesday it has expanded spot Bitcoin and Ether trading to UAE clients who qualify as professional investors, with at least 4 million dirhams (about $1.1 million) in net assets excluding their main residence, Cointelegraph reported. It follows the bank's UAE service for institutional clients in early September. The same report noted Kraken's parent Payward received VARA approval on Monday to provide crypto services through its local entity.

Separately, the Solana Foundation set October 21 for Alpenglow, which replaces the TowerBFT voting system and targets transaction finality in about 150 milliseconds, CoinDesk reported. The 150 ms figure is a target, not a measured result. CoinDesk also noted that because validator votes will move off-chain, Solana's reported transaction count may fall sharply on activation without any drop in real activity.

We read no explanation in the coverage for why Solana, Cardano and Avalanche have fallen about 7.6% each over the week while Bitcoin held flat, and we will not guess at one.

What traders are watching

  • September CPI at 8:30 AM ET, against the 3.6% consensus. See the 10-year yield chart.
  • The $80,970 Tuesday low and the $84,000 overnight high as the near-term range edges on Bitcoin.
