A bounce, and what is under it

On Coinbase's tape Bitcoin's 24-hour range ran from $79,676 to $82,831, a spread of about 4%. CoinDesk's derivatives read was that the rebound has little new long positioning behind it: Bitcoin's open interest rose 0.3% against a 1% price gain, which CoinDesk took to mean shorts closing rather than fresh buyers. Liquidations fell to $311 million from nearly $1 billion a day earlier, and the 30-day Bitcoin implied volatility index (BVIV) slipped to 38% from 42%.

Fund flows were less supportive. Citing SoSoValue data, CoinDesk said U.S. Bitcoin ETFs drew a net $5 million on Thursday after a $261 million outflow on Wednesday, while Ether funds shed about $60 million and Solana funds lost nearly $10 million, their ninth straight day of withdrawals. CoinDesk noted that a second straight day of Bitcoin ETF inflows would be the first sign of buyers behind the bounce.

Warsh gives no signal

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to say what the central bank will do at its October 27-28 meeting, CNBC reported from the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok. "I don't prejudge meetings," he said. The Fed raised rates to 3.75%-4% last month, its first hike since 2023. CNBC cited CME FedWatch pricing a 72.3% chance of no change in October, with most traders expecting a quarter-point hike in December. CoinDesk put the odds of an October hike at about 15%, down from nearly 45% right after Wednesday's CPI report. The 10-year Treasury yield was up 2.9 basis points at 5.12%, CoinDesk reported. See the 10-year yield chart.

Altcoin pockets

CoinDesk said Celestia (TIA) rose 16% to about $0.68, a 2026 high and a gain of about 59% over four weeks, which it linked to a throughput benchmark for Celestia Fibre and a proposed economic upgrade. For Injective, CoinDesk wrote that there was "no obvious, overriding narrative" for its 7.7% gain, though three U.S. ETF applications tied to the token are pending. It also reported that Zcash (ZEC) jumped about 11% even as its only U.S. ETF lost about $15 million on Thursday. We read no explanation in the coverage for why Cardano is still down 5.1% on the week, and we will not guess at one.

What traders are watching

  • ETF flows, and whether Bitcoin funds log a second straight day of inflows.
  • $80,000, the level Bitcoin broke below Thursday and the most traded Bitcoin option on Deribit, per CoinDesk.
  • The October 27-28 Fed meeting, with Warsh offering no forward guidance.
