Middle East headlines hit a weekend market

CoinDesk reported on Saturday that bitcoin had fallen to its weakest level in more than a month, about $79,700 at the time of writing, after the Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. was evacuating personnel from embassies and military bases across the Middle East on intelligence that Iran was preparing attacks on Americans. CoinDesk quoted a Friday memo from the director of national intelligence saying Iranian plotting against U.S. citizens had reached "advanced stages." It also reported that President Trump said at a Florida rally he may order another round of strikes on Iran after the early-November midterms. We have not independently confirmed the WSJ report, and these are the outlets' accounts of official statements.

Weekend trading matters here: bitcoin trades around the clock while stock and bond markets are shut, so crypto is often the first liquid market to react to weekend headlines. Today's recovery above $80,000 shows how thin the margin is. Our Saturday report put the price near $80,512, so the net move since then is about -0.1%, with a dip in between.

The funding behind corporate bitcoin buying

A separate CoinDesk report citing Fidelity Digital Assets research says perpetual preferred stock sold by Strategy, Strive and others funded purchases of 135,979 bitcoin through October 5, more than 0.5% of the maximum supply. Fidelity puts the bitcoin-focused preferred market at roughly $12 billion. The catch, analysts told CoinDesk, is that this demand depends on the preferreds trading near their $100 par value: the report said Strategy's STRC briefly fell into the $70s in late June and trades around $99.40 now.

CoinShares' James Butterfill, quoted by CoinDesk, pointed to Strategy's latest weekly update: $193 million spent repurchasing STRC shares against purchases of only 267 bitcoin. Strategy has also raised its preferred repurchase authorization to $3 billion. For traders, the read is that a large corporate buyer has been putting more money into its own funding instruments than into bitcoin lately. CoinDesk noted U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, by comparison, hold about $106 billion in assets after roughly $57 billion in cumulative net inflows, per Butterfill.

We did not find a specific news cause for the weekly drops in Cardano, Avalanche or Chainlink in the CoinDesk and Cointelegraph coverage we read; they fell more than bitcoin, which is typical when the broad market weakens.

What traders are watching

  • The $80,000 line. Coinbase's 24-hour range of $79,107 to $80,925 shows how tightly price is sitting on it.
  • Monday's open. Stocks, oil and Treasuries will react to the weekend's Iran headlines for the first time. See the crude oil chart.
  • Strategy's next weekly update, to see whether bitcoin buying or preferred buybacks take the larger share of its cash.
