Oil, stocks and a lost moving average

Coinbase shows bitcoin's range over the last 24 hours at $80,347 to $81,962. Cointelegraph reported that bitcoin dipped below $81,000 after Friday's Wall Street open, touching $80,988 on TradingView, as U.S. stocks opened lower on worries about AI-sector spending and as oil jumped on tension around the U.S.-Iran conflict. Cointelegraph put WTI above $102 and Brent near $116 a barrel. CoinDesk's live blog said Brent was above $116 for the first time since late April, with the S&P 500 down 0.6% and the Nasdaq down 0.2% at the time. The two outlets differ on how far back the oil comparison goes, so we are not giving one.

Cointelegraph quoted Keith Alan of Material Indicators saying bitcoin had fallen below its 50-day simple moving average, at $81,781, and that a failure to reclaim it by Friday's daily close could bring a test of $78,000 to $80,000. At $80,512, bitcoin is below that average. That is one analyst's scenario, not a forecast.

The ETF cost-basis line

CoinDesk cited Farside Investors data showing U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs lost $635 million on Thursday, the largest daily outflow since June 25. It also cited Glassnode's estimate that the funds' average cost basis is $82,313, and said bitcoin was struggling beneath it. On that figure, bitcoin is about 2.2% below the average price at which ETF money came in. Cointelegraph had earlier noted a zone of support between $80,000 and $81,500 where the ETF holders' aggregate cost basis sits. Farside's history, as relayed by CoinDesk, shows bitcoin has tended to be lower 7, 30 and 90 days after outflows above $300 million, but CoinDesk itself cautioned that the sample is small, since the funds have existed for under three years.

Regulation: the SEC puts tokenization on its exam list

On Friday the SEC published its fiscal 2027 examination priorities. Cointelegraph reported that tokenization appears for the first time as an area of focus for examinations of critical market infrastructure, alongside quantum computing and extended trading hours, and that crypto assets are not a standalone priority for a second straight year. We read this as a signal about where examiners are looking, not a new rule. We did not find a specific news cause for the larger drops in Cardano, Chainlink or Avalanche in the CoinDesk and Cointelegraph coverage we read.

What traders are watching

  • The $81,781 average and the $82,313 ETF cost basis on the way up, and the $78,000 to $80,000 zone analysts name on the way down.
  • Oil and Iran headlines, which drove Friday's move. See the crude oil chart.
  • ETF flows after the biggest outflow day since June.
