Bitcoin stuck under $87,000
Bitcoin pushed above $87,000 on Monday and met heavy selling for the third time since September 23, CoinDesk reported. The coin briefly slid to $85,200 before European trading opened. Analysts at FxPro told CoinDesk that a run of higher lows that began last week is under threat but has not broken, and that a drop below $84,000 would hand control to sellers, with the recent low near $83,000 the next test and $80,000 in play after that.
On Coinbase's tape the price is about $716, or 0.8%, below that $87,000 ceiling and about $3,284, or 3.8%, above $83,000. The 24-hour range was $84,944 to $86,718, a spread of about 2%. Bitcoin is also 32% below its record of more than $126,000 set a year ago today, CoinDesk noted.
Bond volatility is the number to watch
Treasury yields eased on Tuesday from their highest levels in more than two decades as oil slipped. CNBC reported the 10-year at 5.281%, down 3 basis points, after Monday's peak, and Brent about 2% lower at $98.05. The Treasury's own yield curve showed the 10-year closing Monday at 5.31% and the 30-year at 5.66%, up from 5.28% and 5.63% on Friday, per the Treasury's daily yield curve. Minutes of the Fed's September meeting arrive Wednesday, and CNBC said the CME's FedWatch tool shows a 78% chance rates are held at the next meeting.
The less obvious signal is in bond volatility. CoinDesk's Daybook pointed to the MOVE index, the bond market's version of the VIX, which is around 116, near its March high and the highest reading since April 2025, while the VIX and bitcoin's own 30-day implied volatility gauge sit near year-to-date lows. One macro writer quoted there argued that MOVE has tended to flash first. CoinDesk's own data show bitcoin's daily returns do not track MOVE closely over 60 or 90 days, so this is a watch item, not a rule. See the 10-year chart.
Solana settlement program, and what we could not explain
The Solana Foundation launched Solana DvP on Tuesday, an open-source, externally audited program that settles an asset and its payment together in one on-chain transaction, so both legs complete or neither does. CoinDesk reported that J.P. Morgan contributed settlement expertise, and that privacy features are planned. Solana itself was flat over 24 hours at $120.37, so the market has not repriced it on the news.
We looked for a specific reason behind Cardano's 14.1% weekly gain and Avalanche's 5.5% daily rise in the CoinDesk coverage we read and did not find one. We are not guessing at a cause.
What traders are watching
- Wednesday's Fed minutes, and whether yields resume their climb.
- $84,000 and $87,000, the edges of bitcoin's current range.
- The MOVE index, which would need to clear its March high to confirm the stress analysts describe.
