War Room

Melania Trump hosts Russian and Ukrainian envoys at the White House, but Moscow's line has not moved

The first lady called for a "more enduring" ceasefire after the six-day Oleshky truce. Ukraine's side says the next step is the political track; neither capital has explained her role.

U.S. first lady Melania Trump on Thursday received Russian and Ukrainian delegations at the White House and called for a "more enduring" ceasefire in Ukraine, BBC News reported. AP and Reuters also carried the event. It followed last week's truce in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, which both Moscow and Kyiv credited her with helping arrange. We covered the start of that truce in our October 28 report; this update covers only what is new.

What happened at the White House

  • Who attended: per BBC, Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova, Ukrainian MP Davyd Arakhamia and Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev. It was held away from the U.S.-brokered peace talks that BBC says have run without success since last year.
  • What she said: Melania Trump said residents of Oleshky "walked down familiar streets without fear of explosions" for the first time since 2022, and that she had reviewed demining plans, evacuation routes and hospital access. She thanked both Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
  • Letters: she handed Dmitriev and Arakhamia personal letters for their presidents. The contents were not disclosed.
  • Ukraine's framing: Arakhamia called the truce the "biggest de-escalation since 2022" and said the political track remains "complex."

What nobody has confirmed

BBC notes that neither Moscow nor Kyiv has described the nature or extent of her involvement. A Kherson regional government source told the BBC that evacuation work had been under way for almost a year before others became involved; BBC says it could not establish who did what. After the meeting, Zelensky said the truce showed that "when Putin wants the fighting to stop, it stops." Ukrainian analyst Dmytro Levus told BBC there has been "no change whatsoever" in Russia's position. These are their statements, not established facts.

The fighting elsewhere has not paused. BBC reports that attacks this week killed and injured civilians across Ukraine, and our Nov. 4 update covers the toll Ukraine reported. Russia has confirmed separate talks in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10-11, per our Nov. 3 story.

What it means for oil and markets

WTI crude, three months. Chart by TradingView.

We saw no market move attributed to this event, and a humanitarian truce around one city does not change supply. Oil is being driven by Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, as in this morning's report. Yahoo Finance futures data at about 3:56 PM ET showed December WTI at $90.67, against a $88.12 close on Wednesday and $104.12 on Oct. 30. The December Brent contract has expired; front-month Brent (January 2027) was $98.47 against $94.62 on Wednesday.

For shipping, airlines, defense stocks and consumers, nothing in this event changes the picture: no corridor, sanction or airspace rule was announced. Russian and Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure remain the Ukraine-side oil risk, and a ceasefire beyond Oleshky would be the thing to watch.
