Grading is shaping the ground surface to a planned level and slope, so water drains away from buildings and the site works as designed.
Definition
Grading means cutting, filling and shaping the soil to levels shown on the plans. It sets how water moves, where buildings sit and how access roads and paths run.
A plain example
Illustrative example: the plans call for the ground to fall away from the house on all sides. The contractor reshapes the soil so rain flows to a drain instead of toward the foundation.
Why it matters
Poor grading is a common cause of wet basements, standing water and foundation problems, and many places require a grading plan with a permit.
Common confusion
Grading is not landscaping. Landscaping is planting and finishing. Rough grading and final grading are also different stages.
On a project
Check the grading plan, who surveys and signs off levels, and what the local authority requires before and after the work.
Quick answers
- What is rough grading versus final grading? Rough grading sets major levels. Final grading is the fine shaping before surfaces go in.
- Do I need a permit? Often for larger earthwork. Ask your local authority.
- Why does slope away from the house matter? It moves water away from the foundation.
Related terms
Always check the project drawings and specification, and confirm requirements with the engineer of record and the local authority.
