The subfloor is the structural panel layer fixed to the floor joists that the finished floor is laid over.
The subfloor is the structural panel layer fixed to the floor joists that the finished floor is laid over.
Definition
A subfloor is the rigid deck over joists. It carries foot traffic and furniture and gives a flat, stiff base for tile, wood or carpet.
A plain example
Illustrative example only: tongue-and-groove panels are laid across the joists with the joints staggered, glued and screwed to stop squeaks.
Why it matters
A flat, stiff subfloor prevents cracked tile and noisy floors. Moisture exposure before the roof is on can damage it.
Common confusion
It is not the underlayment. The underlayment is a thinner layer placed on top of the subfloor to prepare it for the finish.
On a project
Check panel grade, thickness, joist spacing it is rated for, and fastener spacing, and protect it from rain during construction.
Quick answers
- What is a subfloor made of? Plywood or OSB panels over wood framing, or concrete on a slab.
- Why does it squeak? Loose fasteners or panels rubbing; glue and proper screws reduce it.
- Is underlayment required? Depends on the finish; follow the flooring maker's instructions.
