Sheathing
Sheathing is the structural panel layer fixed over wall, roof or floor framing that stiffens it and gives a base for cladding.
Sheathing is the structural panel layer fixed over wall, roof or floor framing that stiffens it and gives a base for cladding.
Definition
Sheathing is a board or panel, such as plywood, OSB or gypsum-based board, fastened over framing. It closes the frame, resists racking and supports weather layers.
A plain example
Illustrative example only: the wall framing is covered with panels fixed at a stated nail spacing. A weather barrier then goes over the sheathing before the cladding.
Why it matters
In many designs the sheathing is part of the lateral bracing. The fastener type and spacing matter as much as the panel itself.
Common confusion
Sheathing is not the cladding or siding. It sits under the weather barrier and finish.
On a project
Check panel type, thickness, fastener schedule and edge spacing against the structural drawings or engineered shear schedule.
Quick answers
- Is sheathing structural? Wall and roof sheathing often is; the drawings say whether it is part of the bracing.
- What fixes it? Nails or screws at the specified spacing.
- Does it need a weather barrier? Usually yes, over it and under the cladding.
