Light steel frame buyer guides

Thermal bridging and insulation in steel-framed walls

Steel conducts heat, so insulation strategy matters. How thermal bridging works, what the Digital Oro catalog shows for wall and roof insulation, and what to ask for.

Insulation inside a steel frame does not behave the same as insulation in a solid wall. Steel studs can create paths for heat to travel around the insulation. The fix depends on climate and code, and it should be settled before ordering.

Common approaches

  • Cavity insulation between studs.
  • Continuous insulation outside or inside the frame to interrupt the steel path.
  • Insulated panels or sheathing as part of the cladding system.

What the catalog shows

Digital Oro International's catalog shows a wall frame with glass wool, and a roof system with an insulation layer and extra insulation options (extruded polystyrene panel; polyurethane foam panel with alucoil). Some roofing items cite CE, A1, AS or SGS in their standard line. The catalog does not publish an overall thermal resistance or U-value for an assembly.

What to request

  • The target R or U value from your code and climate zone.
  • Calculated or tested thermal performance of the full assembly, including the steel.
  • Where condensation could form, with the vapor control layer position confirmed.

Where Digital Oro fits

Digital Oro International lists a light steel frame as the first category of its material catalog: AS1397 G550 AZ150 steel in 0.75 or 0.95 mm, zinc-aluminum plated at more than 150 g/m2, offered in Australian and American standards, with wall frames, roof trusses and sub-floor options. See the light steel frame catalog map or all ten categories. Prices, lead times and project-specific engineering come from Digital Oro in a quotation; contact Digital Oro with your project.

Questions people ask

What is thermal bridging?

Heat flowing through a material that conducts better than the insulation around it. Steel studs conduct heat, so continuous insulation or other measures are often used.

What insulation does the catalog show?

Glass wool in the wall frame, and for roofs an insulation layer plus extra insulation options such as extruded polystyrene and polyurethane foam panels.

Does the catalog give a U-value?

No. Request thermal data for your assembly and your climate zone.
