Fed week and the $80,000 line
The Federal Open Market Committee decides on Wednesday. Cointelegraph reported that markets see better than 90% odds that the target range stays at 3.75% to 4%, and CoinDesk, citing CME's FedWatch tool, put the chance of no change at 90% and of another increase in December at around 80%. The two outlets describe the December pricing differently, so the hold on Wednesday is the firm part; the December hike odds are a market estimate that will move with the data. The Treasury's own figures show the 10-year yield closed Friday at 5.00% and the 30-year at 5.33%, according to the daily yield curve.
Bitcoin spent the weekend testing the round number. Cointelegraph reported that about $150 million of long positions were liquidated over two hours on Saturday as bitcoin fell to $79,145, and that bitcoin is on course to end October down about 4%. That would be its second straight October decline, after a 3.9% fall in October 2025 that was followed by a 17.5% drop in November, Cointelegraph said. Our own Coinbase low for the past 24 hours is $79,255, so the $79,000 area has held so far.
Leverage is light, ETF money is leaving
CoinDesk's market data shows no crowded trade. Bitcoin futures open interest was $139.9 billion, up 0.85% on the day, while liquidations fell 71% to $153 million, and funding rates were only mildly positive. Spot bitcoin ETFs are the weaker signal: CoinDesk reported $138 million of outflows on Friday, taking the two-day total to $772 million.
In options, CoinDesk said the busiest bitcoin contract was the October 28 $77,000 put, ahead of the October 28 $84,000 call, and that puts still cost more than calls, though by less than a day earlier. A put is as often protection as a bearish view, so this is a description of positioning, not a forecast.
One large call trade, and what it does not tell us
CoinDesk also reported, citing the exchange Derive, that a single wallet bought 800 bitcoin call options struck at $90,000 and expiring November 6, about $68 million of face value, while selling other calls that offset most of the cost. Derive's implied odds of bitcoin topping $100,000 by Christmas rose to 12% from 9.7% a week earlier, and the implied odds of falling below $70,000 dropped to 11% from 15.6%. CoinDesk noted that Derive is far smaller than Deribit, where puts are the pricier side. One wallet's trade says little about the market as a whole.
We did not find a news event behind this weekend's small moves in ether or the smaller coins in the CoinDesk or Cointelegraph coverage we read. Cointelegraph tied the week's mood to a heavy run of U.S. tech earnings and worries about AI spending; we cannot link those directly to crypto prices.
